Did he really get fat from eating donuts?

Being a true man of the South, I would think he got fat from eating his momma’s cornbread and buttermilk.

The cynic in me would say that donut-eating blob cut a deal behind the scenes to save his own bacon while all the while sticking a knife into someone else for the same transgressions he was involved in.

I think we have seen this scenario before with Fat Phil...

That isn't cynical.

It is an educated guess and likely to be the case.

You actually thought he was retiring? Seriously? Everyone who's been paying attention knows that Fulmer was fired.... He was allowed to retire because he is a Hall of Fame coach with the only national championship at Tennessee in decades.

Exactly what happened---and for the same reason UT
paid millions to Phats to go away the first time ;
to keep Vol fan's shining light untarnished.
It's a real stretch, that included the crudeness of handing out bags of money on campus, to believe Phats knew or even sniffed NOTHING and not up to his copious arse in the desperate attempts to bring Tennessee back. So, he's allowed to "retire" and again escape the pile of shite he helped create.
"Did you know Phillip came out of retirement to take his current position and never intended for it to be long term ? He's a legend at the University of Tennessee and Phillip was not in any way involved or knew anything about this."

He was forced out. UT allowed him to "retire" instead of saying he was fired. The exact same thing happened with Tub at Auburn.
