This season, as his team has wheezed its way to a 3–2 record that could realistically be 1–4
So, which game would Auburn have won without the luck/help from the refs? Kentucky (blown TD call/two big turnovers by UK)? Arkansas (botched spike/fumble)? Ole Miss (botched touched kickoff)?

quote:

Slow-motion replay showed the ball appeared to touch Shivers’s hand, but he let it go into the end zone for what was called a touchback.
Was there really enough video evidence to, beyond a reasonable doubt, overturn the call on the field?

Ole Miss had just scored to take a 28–27
Ole Miss recovers the fumble in the end zone, for a TD and kicks the PAT. OM now leads 35-27. Auburn goes down and scores a TD and goes for 2 (and gets it), which they did 2 possessions later. Game tied at 35. Say OM scores and goes for 2 to make it a 9 point lead and don't get it. It is then 34-27. Auburn scores and kicks the PAT to tie or goes for 2 and gets it and wins.

What is this ITT that the OP did not reference? International Telephone and Telegraph?

They probably would have still won the Kentucky game.

Ole Miss would have been a toss up.

They would have definitely lost the Arkansas game.

Gus Malzhan has yet to turn in back to back 9 win seasons. Was Les Miles that mediocre? Was Mark Richt that mediocre?

Didn't realize Gus hadn't done that. But, yes, Miles was that mediocre his last several years at LSU
2013: 10-3
2014: 8-5
2015: 9-3 (three straight blowout losses to AL, OM, AR)
2016: 2-2 - fired

However, his comparison to Miles is more in line with his uncanny ability to fall arse backwards into wins via very unusual and "fluky" means. I think we're all aware of the peculiar nature of a multitude of wins (and losses) under Les Miles. Miles also seemed to come out of nowhere and have a magical season that always resulted in him leveraging Joe Alleva to unreasonable extensions and guarantees. Obviously, Gus getting a $49MM extension after beating Alabama but before losing to UGA and UCF to close out the season was a special kind of gaffe from the AD to give him that extension in the middle of the season.

Gus is really leaning in to the expression, “I’d rather be lucky than good.”

And I am specifically referring to ITT, the main board for Auburn fans and ground zero for many conspiracy theories about college football. If you're not part of ITT, congrats on maintaining your sanity.

The OP referenced ITT. Get over it.
okay cool, so you just don’t know what you’re talking about

ITT is an abbreviation for “in this thread”

The board you’re referencing is “ITAT” => “Inside the Auburn Tigers”

Yup, my bad on that.

You guys have been pretty stable. Your ITAT brethren, not so much.

That said, I have seen quite a few Auburn posters on here make some pretty outlandish claims about the REC

I don't think it really has anything to do with Gus. That's kind of what Auburn football is, right? Long periods of ineptitude and failure interspersed with highly improbable and incredible victories that you can tell your grandkids about

I’m pretty sure you’ve only seen the free boards. Any free board on the Internet is a general wasteland, including the Bama ones.

Prayer @ Jordan Hare - Lucky for sure, but made up for a BS non-UGA touchdown earlier so feels fair to me.

Kick Six - Pretty unlikely way to win, but not "luck". We were tied with Bama 4 quarters in, so take away this play we haven't lost anything.

Les Miles Game - What?

This Year - Yeah, no denying it.

Game was tied prior to the Kick Six dude, why are you just assuming you won, otherwise?

I think the Auburn "luck" argument is often only viewed from one side.

They also scored with 1:00 left to go ahead in a BCS National Title Game but still lost.

They've lost 3 consecutive games to LSU by a combined total of just 8 points... all of which AU held a lead in the 2nd half.

Auburn has eeked out some very lucky wins as of late, but they've also come up just short in some games which would have been gigantic. They are simultaneously extremely lucky and yet also at times seem cursed.

That one play overshadows three other plays in that game that came at crucial moments in the 4th quarter - one of the most insane 4th quarters in college football history.

1. A holding call on Bama following a 3rd down run by TJ Yeldon to the one yard line. There was a hold on the play, but it happened a good 5-10 yards behind the play and is one that is usually not flagged. I think Bama went on to miss another FG after this penalty.

2. A false start penalty on a Bama FG attempt. The kicker actually made the kick before anyone realized there was a pre-snap penalty. Replay showed the RG barely moved, and in most games would have likely been missed by the refs. Of course, Bama then missed the next attempt after the 5 yard penalty.

3. The game tying TD by Auburn there was an Auburn OL downfield. Now, that season that penalty was hardly ever called, but it did lead to the league enforcing it more going forward.

Not blaming that loss on any of those calls because despite those Bama had plenty of opportunities to put that game away and kept stepping on its own dick. Just evidence of more Gus luck during his tenure.

IIRC, Saban made some questionable decisions in that 4th quarter outside asking his kicker to kick a FG he didn't have a strong enough leg to make that led to the Kick 6. It's been awhile now, and me not having a vested interest in either school I can't remember the details. I just remember, at the time, wondering why Saban was making so uncharacteristically poor decisions that resulted in keeping Auburn alive in a game they were controlling. I feel like one of them was late in the game him going for it on 4th in the red zone instead of kicking the short FG to give them a two score lead.

When you slow the video down so that you can see his fingers bend back when the ball touches them, absolutely.
