Hopefully no needles were thrown in honor of the late Mr. Petty.

I liked him more before Florida man decided to canonize him as a rock-n-roll saint. He was okay, he was never this giant figure they're trying to make him into.

Fans tossed a few items toward the band, and I can’t say I blame them. Maybe it’s not unusual for a visiting band to intentionally disrupt a home-crowd tradition, but that was a classless move.

?? “Fans tossed a few items toward the band, and I can’t say I blame them.”
Yeah, the LSU band is the “classless” one here.

“Home-crowd tradition”…How many years has UF been performing this longstanding tradition? 4? ??

“it would have served the band right if a sinkhole had swallowed the entire horn section”

Essentially wishing death on some band geeks over a Tom Petty song being blasted all over the stadium’s speakers, and a song that you can freely listen to at anytime…??

This writer is a crazed loon.

Trying to be a good sport about this. Not being petty in my response. But can anyone (anyone, no matter what fanbase) show me in any way that he was a fan of the Florida Gators? A picture of him wearing a shirt or a jersey? Him playing a guitar with the UF emblem on it? A picture of him at a game (home or away)? An article about his fandom? Anything at all?

This is such a stupid controversy.

Pretty sure there are more Petty fans than Florida fans on the rant.

Tom petty sucks. His music sucks.

Quit trying to force this into a “tradition”.

Ah so the band who stated that it did not intend to mess up the Tom Petty tribute before, now tried to mess it up again.

There’s usually a staffer for UF sitting next to the LSU band director telling him when to play. That’s typical for every game with both bands. It’s all scripted down to minutes and seconds. Your volleyball team is getting recognized during a TV timeout? Cool, the bands know not to play. Some guy told LSU they could play, so they did.

Buddy of mine’s son is in the band. Said at least two low brass members got hit in the face with full cans of beer.

If a college band playing over Tom freaking Petty causes you to assault them with a full can of beer, you’re a soft, pathetic piece of shite.

88,000 fans and a stadium sound system is drowned out by 65 band members…that’s freakin sad!

And I’ll tell you what else. We’d be doing them a favor if we interrupted that gay-arse two bits crap they do before the games. I mean just how lacking in originality & tradition do you have to be for that to be your pre-game? That’s the first cheer that girls learn when they’re like 4.

Not that you will care since, judging by your language, you're not the type to be sentimental about anything ever, but the Two Bits cheer actually has a lot of deep symbolism for Florida and way, WAY more history and tradition than this recent Tom Petty crap we've crammed into the game now.

Two Bits is goofy, sure, but I would imagine most cheers coming from 1949 would be. It was started by a fellow attending a Gator game and feeling bad for the coaches and team being booed for sucking, so he became a super fan and rallied other fans to not be shitty and start supporting their team. Started in 1949 and from all accounts, he was a stand-up guy.

Mr. Two Bits

EDIT: To amend that I didn't realize he had passed after his retirement. Damn.

3 wins against Daddy LSU in the last 13 games combined with the death of former UF quarterback/ rock legend / season ticket holder Tom Petty has UFORFEIT fans pretty salty.

If the Petty tribute is so important to UF, why not do it during the half instead of wedging it in the 3rd-4th quarter break.

Next, bands often “battle” during games, but this is the first time I’ve heard of a fan base getting butt-hurt about a band beating the stadium public address system!

The Golden Band from Tigerland “won’t back down” from their tradition!

I’ve asked the same thing. Even the tree they claim he planted on their campus, Petty himself said he had no recollection of actually planting it.
