Mertz wasn't good last year. He just did check downs short of the sticks on 3rd downs many times that had no chance to get a 1st down. It jacked up his completion % while doing nothing to help you win. He played like the object of the game was not to throw an incompletion instead of moving the sticks on 3rd down.

Fk Mertz & Napier.

Mertz completed 72% on screen passes.
5th year Sr who's been trash his entire career.

GTFOH with that BS.

If your O line is so good what was the issue with not handling the blitzing of ND hardly.

Did Lagway play against Miami?

Yes, it was the only Florida drive of the game and the only one to convert a 3rd down. The entire offense was dead with Mertz as QB, their 10 points came off a long TD run and 3 points that were gifted by a Miami INT.

If Mertz starts, you have to believe he's going to get a very short leash, unless Napier is just trying to get that bailout money quicker.

I haven't thought about it at all.

Mertz in the game against Miami was the worst we have ever seen from him without a doubt. He did an acceptable job last year, but that Miami game is the only memory of Mertz people have right now and he stunk it up. Lagway looks the part and has good deep pass accuracy at least. I just don't know if he can produce against an SEC defense, but, I'd like to find out.

Mertz is going to take the field next week, and he's going to get booed by the fans. Lagway is probably going to be in for some running packages and hopefully not be hurt. Barring a breakout Mertz game, fans are going to be pissed. Meanwhile Napier is going to be confused by this and think the solution is to double down yet again by practicing doing more of the same.

Ummm no. We will be lucky to win and thankful we did. Florida has a good chance to win.

Mertz can't throw the ball down field. He's good at throwing horizontally and throwing to receivers who are behind the line of scrimmage, resulting in losses or minimal gains. Napier prefers this approach for some reason.

Lagway is inexperienced and raw. He will throw into triple coverage, but he'll also make some jaw dropping perfect throws to his receivers. And he can take off running and plow through defenders. His ceiling is way higher but he will turn the ball over against SEC defenses on occasion. Billy sees this option as too risky. He is the epitome of scared money.

Our coach is a moron. It's too easy to contain Mertz since he can't accurately throw the ball down the field. All he does is checkdowns constantly on 3rd downs.

I think he wants the buyout and to go back to a smaller school. He has looked rough in the last couple press conferences. I think he's lost faith in his "system" translating to wins. It sucks because he seems like a good guy, but he is a terrible coach.

From an A&M perspective, we much prefer Mertz. Thanks, Billy.

Personally, I want Urban, but I sincerely doubt we would go that route. He is the one proven winner we could get, and I think he would be motivated after the Jaguars debacle.

Most likely we would go after Lane, get turned down, then get Jedd Fisch. We would all probably be positive about it since he is alumni, but then it probably wouldn't work out either.

Well Arkansas just brought back Petrino. Wouldn’t be shocked if Florida make a run at Meyer.

West Georgia's offense was just one TD less productive against Samford.

Lagway could be elite and Mertz clearly is not. But, there is no way that Lagway is as good as the average fan thinks he is. No fanbase as a whole is capable of processing good performances against really bad teams. So Mertz will trot out there first play, and the fans will keep booing him to begin every drive even though he doesn't deserve to be booed. Fans will say they are booing the coach, but I know players do not make that distinction. In a way this will be a home field disadvantage and we'll just have to see how Mertz holds up. He's started about 300 college games so far, so maybe he can filter it out.

Further complicating matters is that Mertz probably made his worst start ever against Miami and the OL let him get absolutely mauled. He's got to be concerned about his health playing behind them. If A&M didn't have their own problems, this could get really ugly.

Keeping in mind it’s Samford, but if you had said that’s a true freshman making his first start in Week 2 I would not have believed you. Even at the post game pc he spoke like an experienced upperclassman. He’s extremely polished and projects leadership. It’s easy to see why they made an exception to the rule of not allowing freshman to speak to the media.

I don’t recall ever seeing a dual threat QB that can throw that accurately and with that touch. It reminded me of Wuerffel the way he was releasing the ball before the receiver made their break and only they could catch it.

He’s going to make mistakes and against better competition probably get picked trying to force it into those tight windows when the check down is open. But he’s also stretching the field and defense. We actually passed to set up the run last night and forced the defense out of the box which I haven’t seen in years. He even made o line look better than they are, but that’s what special players do: they make everyone around them better.

Fans and boosters will give grace to allow Lagway and this young group to grow together. But to do that you have to commit to starting him

We didn't throw the ball deep but most of his passes were downfield. Let's at least be honest.

I do wonder if Napier is protecting Lagway somewhat.

If Napier sees the difference right now between Lagway and Mertz being relatively small, then having him get his confidence smashed against this season's schedule isn't ideal. There may not be that many games that could be moved from the loss to the win column by playing him.
