Then, in 2014, people will be crying "We should all agree to use the playoff champion. Who cares about what happened before the playoffs?"
Just because the AP didn't exist in the 20s and 30s or whatever, doesn't mean those titles shouldn't count, IMHO at least.

Regardless, that was the foundation of many top programs still winning at a high level. The early years are revered in MLB, NFL, NBA, etc. Why is one the most popular sports in America so intent on forgetting its early history? Yes, put it in perspective, but don't abandon it.

I don't really give Bama fans much crap about claiming NCs Before someone calls me a hypocrit but the only year I don't think you have a legit argument with is 1938. I know what the major polls said but what else did you want that team to do? Solid competition and as stated only allowed 16 points

And? So 60 years from now, AP titles shouldn't count since they won't be relevant to the modern game of that time period (especially considering CF will likely consist of 4 super conferences and a 16 team playoff by then anyway)?

If your asking me if I thought they were the best team then the answer is no, however considering the way other schools claim NCs I wouldn't blame them if they claimed it.
Btw there are other years that UT could claim if we used the standards of some schools

When USC was forced to vacate the title, Auburn issued a statement saying they were prepared to claim the 2004 championship.
Had it all worked out, no one should've given them shite about it. There was no playoff and they were, by far, the most legit team that year, since USC was stripped.

And that's the problem with the selection process. No one will have EVER known. But since there is no longer an existing champion, the BCS should retroactively award AU with the '04 title.

it seems to me that LSU is the only school that claims legit NCs....and not even all of them. we could probably legitimately claim 1908 and 1936

Hell, Michigan only has two AP titles. The rest of their 11 claims are from the same selectors that 'Bama cites for the four pre-AP titles.
You can rake many of the major programs over the coals for their title claims. That said, I honestly wish we would drop the 1941 claim. No need for it and it brings the others down.
