Even as an LSU fan, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Eli!

Although I live in Alabama, I'm not close to the Alabama program, but even Alabama's most faithful fans are wondering what the heck is going on in Tuscaloosa? Next to Saban, Eli was the second most popular figure associated with the Alabama football program and now he's told his services are no longer needed.
This man - I should say legend - just overcame a bout with cancer and was beloved by not only Alabama fans, but throughout college football and he's told the university has decided to go another direction! I just don't get it! Another direction?
Since Saban's retirement, the only direction I've seen Alabama football going is in a downward spiral with some of the head-scratching decisions that have been made the past few weeks. It started with hiring a west coast HC with absolutely no SEC experience and he goes to hiring a full staff with little to no experience in the SEC. On top of that he brings several coaches from Washington with him and within two weeks, three have already left for other jobs.
It appears now the only stable part of the football program is instability, which is mind-boggling considering it's been one of the elite programs in college football for a long, long time!
I guess it's a good thing Saban decided to keep an office on campus, because at the rate things are changing on the Capstone, his statue would have probably already been moved into storage at this point.
I'm sure Chris Stewart will do a great job, but he will never come close to the legacy of Eli Gold, truly one of the best voices college football has ever heard. I think it's safe to say, Eli has made a huge contribution to the Alabama football program and to college football in general and deserved to leave on much better terms than he was given.

He certainly called his fair share of LSU arse whippings.

As an lsu fan, why does anything you posted matter to you?

But every aspect of Bama seems to be falling apart and the fire in Tuscaloosa continues to burn

Eli Gold. Alabama football play by play announcer. Voice of the Tide

Eli wasn't calling the road games this past season. The AL football network was keeping additional callers on staff for away games. The network figured to cut it down to a crew for both home AND away games. I loved hearing Eli a few years ago, but I can see the need for a change.

Gold more than anyone should have had the pleasure to call the Mason Taylor 2 point conversion
Sucks about the cancer and Bama kicking him to the curb

He also had the pleasure to call the Yeldon screen pass.

Eli should have been let go years ago. If he was your only source of information you would have no idea what is going on. That's his only job and he wasn't good at it. Keeping him around when Chris Stewart has been doing it for years and is vastly superior didn't make any sense

Dude, you're on an island by yourself with that opinion. I have a ton of friends that are Alabama fans and not one supported this move. They were shocked and pretty upset that he was basically fired and disrespected because of how the situation was handled. The guy was the voice of Alabama football for 35 years so I think he deserved a better send off than given the middle finger and shown the door!

Yeah, he wasn't the best at explaining what was going on. For example, on a running play he might say "handoff to Henry, big hole, he's going to go for twelve yards before they bring him down." Was it a sweep? A run off tackle? A dive? A counter? A draw? Who on the other team brought him down? And forget hearing much about if someone else assisted, such as guard or tackle pulling. Similar situation on defense, "Reuben Foster punches through and knocks Mettenburger flat." How did Reuben punch through? Was it designed or did LSU miss a block?
He was great with Kenny Stabler because Stabler helped him clean up a lot of this and Stabler was usually drunk and it was during the Dubose and Francine years, so hearing him get pissed the same as all of us were was funny as hell. But, since Stabler was fired Eli hasn't been the same.

No you dont. They may be acquaintances and I’ll bet none of them ever had to listen to Eli call a game without the benefit of watching the game on tv. They are all probably younger than 40 and couldn’t tell you who John Forney or Doug Layton were. Eli was a terrible radio broadcaster. He never gave down and distance, formation sets, score, fourth time remaining during the quarters. He couldn’t paint a picture of the game like a radio broadcaster should be able to do. I lost count of the number of times That he would say we gained 6 yards on a play after first down to come back and say it was second and nine to start the next play.

I have no doubt you are correct, but you don't disrespect a legend who has been a part of your program for 35 years. There's a way to handle a situation like this and Byrne mishandled this situation big time. Byrne better hope every decision he makes works out because I think this move has a lot of fans very upset. Should he miss on any of his hires or other decisions, particularly hiring Deboer, he will quickly be tossed out with the weekly garbage in the blink of an eye!

Now THAT is how you concern troll. Bravo, OP.
Lol you expect us to believe you listened to Alabama football games on the radio?
Wait, you are an LSU fan, so your Bama obsession could be so deep that you actually did. In that case sorry for your loss.

Considering Stewart has done the majority of the games the last few years. Don't think anyone will care except now when I'm driving I actually will know what is going on. Last year it was jarring having Eli do home games and basically just say X player ran though a hole

I'd say him and Gene Deckerhoff are the only remaining "legendary" radio play by play guys left.
Sad day.
