College football as we know it died after that 2019 season, for better or worse.
Well I would say it was end of 2022 when it really died. The A&M class that was clearly NIL purchased were frosh so they weren't making huge impacts yet. Now it's has gone crazy

Just shut up, bama had been cheating since the bear. Saban just brought it to another level. When he no longer had advantage he quit and then just whined about it.

The absolute cognitive dissonance to bitch about Alabama's schemes when they bought a national title by slipping six figure sums into Cecil Newton's collection plate. Using a church as a laundering mechanism is some satan worshipper shite.

An unproven freshman making millions before they step foot on the field boggles my damn mind. But hey, it's their money. So long as it brings x a natty, all's well that ends well. It does make me wonder just how much someone like Tebow or Manziel would've made through NIL.

I suppose, though, that the players are getting more demanding about getting paid, and when it becomes more important than team, and playing to win titles, I guess it's a clear why coaches are going NFL.
Kind of a non-sequitur. The NFL has always been about players maximizing their money, sitting out to get new contracts, etc.
If that were what was bothering coaches, the NFL wouldn't be their destination. Retirement would.
Those going to the NFL either have better contracts offered or want to win at the highest level of the sport. It is certainly not about players wanting more money to play.

Mixed reactions.
Tough read coming from the GOAT, but sobering and true.
Also ripe for shots here.
The new normal I guess.

Let be clear it was not about paying players for Saban it was about having control. It was the combination of NIL/Transfer portal that kills Saban. He is a control freak and always has been. He is a multi-millionaire complaining that some kids want to get paid while drives a Ferrari at his Palm Beach home. Look at how he retired, he did it on the day the Spring semester started, the entire idea was to trap players at Bama. Lets stop pretending, Saban loved the old system because he had bagmen that helped him skirt the rules and get the best players. That is gone and so is his dominance.

Except he didn't trap any players.
So obviously you just make shite up because it makes you feel better.

Rent free 24/7/365 even after he retires. Damn sad.

Yep. College football sucks now. Agree

I never wanted a business model to fail like that one.
I truly hope Saban uses his status as GOAT to advocate for some sanity in the NIL/portal madness.
I realize two genies have been let out of the bottle: one, players only getting schollies plus incidentals while millions are made is gone. But the other genie is that players are wed to the school the fans support to any degree. That was the suspended disbelief that has kept CFB the best sport--its demise will have, IMO, a trickle down that leads to a decrease in its popularity over time. And that strangles the golden goose. Again, just me and i'm old.

RIP college football

Nick Saban got his degree in Psychology, he used what he learned in his process. In the process, the only individual goal is to use your talent, conditioning and technique to beat your man on the next play. Focus is required such that failure to beat your man on the last play is irrelevant - as is the scoreboard. Learn from the failure, improve the technique, and beat your man on the next play. If everyone on the team consistently achieves their personal goal of beating their man on the next play, team goals of winning the game, the conference championship and the national championship will follow.
When Saban left for the NFL, he realized his process didn't work there because players had other individual goals - often specified in their contracts. Professionals were more concerned about their careers than team goals. His process requires the focus required to achieve the one goal of beating your man on the next play. Distractions from that focus lead to poor technique.
Now he's dealing with professionals again, whose focus isn't solely on the one goal of beating their man. I just don't think he believes his process can work under such conditions, as his time in the NFL proved.
So he hung it up as one of the most successful college football coaches of all time.
Nick, thanks for the memories!

Give me that hungry 3 or 4 star guy who will put in the work and play above their ability. Alabama use to have tons of those guys. I forget his name, but one time we had this undrafted FA LB who made it pretty far before getting cut. The guy was slower than most at the position, which is why he went undrafted. But he was so fast in reading the plays and taking his first step that was able to hang well beyond his physical abilities. That was all from putting in the work over the years. It paid off in college and got him a decent check in the NFL on the scout team.

Saban laments the game he helped create. Cheating for over decade without punishment has consequences
Hugh's mission is to build a roster with quality high school talent who are patient enough to stay the distance, develop & learn while not listening to the voices that want immediate gratification. He's all about building those relationships early and forming a culture that develops the player for the long term.

While I agree that CFB is changing for the worse, he quit.
And made a LOT of $$$ at Bama
Just say you’re too old for this BS & move on.

quote:Nobody doubts that "boosters" weren't behind the car deals, and "100 dollar handshakes" (not the schools), but this type of activity occured in all the elite athletic schools
Because the proof of it gets buried in paperwork. I myself know people that have been in the same room at car dealerships when mark Ingram and Julio jones and all them, dre Kirkpatrick, where they got those dodge chargers from. They were at a car dealership in Boaz Alabama. Young motors to be exact. He would doctor the financial stuff to make it look like person A had this car, when really mark Ingram had the car. Or Julio Jones had the car. I've actually seen the pictures of them being up there. So yes, bama players were getting benefits when they shouldn't have. Just like Texas players were. And LSU. So on and so forth. You can believe what you want too. But I know for a fact thats where they got the cars from.
PS- I've seen it, too.
