Nearly everyone (national scouts, coaches, fans, etc.) would agree that Mettenberger is a better QB than Lee; thus, most LSU fans feel very confident that Zach will come in and thrive. When Miles has had a quality QB on the team, Russell, Flynn, Perrilloux (loosely add him here) until he was dismissed, our passing game was very consistent, if not very good.

The one place LSU has not recruited well in the past few years in at QB. Mettenberger was our first good/great QB recruit in quite some time, and when Miles is given a good QB to work with, yes, good results come with it.

Blame it on Jefferson/Lee, blame it on Crowton; I don't care. But saying LSU fans shouldn't be excited about the new QB is just misguided in this situation.

If he was so good, why didn't he play? He went to JUCO, right? So it's not like he had to sit out a year. If he was the 3rd string QB behind JJ and JL, that tells me that he's not vastly superior to those players. Otherwise, he would have started. Right?

I never said LSU players shouldn't be excited about Mett. I'm saying it's premature to think he'll be a top 5 SEC QB.

Don't you lose like 4-5 players on both sides of the ball? What's your argument for being ahead of those teams then?

ETA: It's not that i don't disagree. To be honest i think Ark USC and UGA could be interchangable in these "power rankings"

They are all kinda interchangable. I would put us ahead of USC since we keep kicking their arse everytime we play them. We return players at all the key positions except safety. By Key positions I mean QB, more than half the oline, more than half the dline. Those three things usually signal success.

Did anyone else catch Gary Danielson on Finebaum yesterday on why he didnt think LSU would be his #1. He stated in his opinion that the new LSU QB would force the style of offensive play calling to change. LSU would not have the QB's feet to rely on as much and the offense would go to more TE and pro style play calling. He said this would be a big adjustment to make. Keep in mind he didnt say LSU would not be to top 5 he was just saying that to him it would be enough to keep them from being #1.

Adjusting the play calling for the QB helps the QB. Getting the ball to play makers more sounds like a positive. In the first 2/3 of the season, with Lee under center, LSU looked a lot like what they will look like next year, except Mett has better footwork, throwing skills, size and a stronger arm. I guess the OL may have to adjust to more passing than this year, and maybe the RB's will be expected to block more, but I don't see either groups struggling with those roles.

I don't think I agree with Gary on that one. The biggest ? might not be on the field at all. It might be in the booth or on the sidelines with the staff. You would think these men who are getting very rich off LSU because of their "skills" could figure it out.

He went to JUCO because he was kicked off the Georgia team and decided to play instead of sit out a year somewhere.

He came in and competed against guys who knew the system for four years. It's not like Jefferson and Lee were mutilated amputees out there and Mett still couldn't beat them out for the starting position. We saw that Lee can throw, but folded in big games. Jefferson could throw it a little bit, but was best with his feet. Not to mention Les's propensity for sticking with one guy.

And yes, right now, I'd say he'll be a Top 5 SEC QB. Wilson, Murrary, McCarron (?), then who??

I heard many people say Wilson was better than Mallett, yet Mallett played over him. It's what happens. System knowledge and seniority play a huge role in coaches' minds, especially at the QB position.

Tyler Bray. Connor Shaw. After that though it's pretty wide open.

As long as Bray is healthy, he is a top 3 QB. Espcially if Hunter/Rodgers are healthy.

True. I had temporarily forgotten Bray. He is good. Shaw, I'm not sold, but played well.

To be honest, I know nothing about Franklin from Mizzou, but he played well against me on NCAA '12.

At least he played. And he plays for a coach that throws the ball a lot more than LSU. Why would you discount him while blindly elevating Mett?

Looks about right, but I think Bama loses too much talent to end up on top next year.

True, he did play. And yes, Spurrier likes to throw the ball more, but he'll have Lattimore back and Alshon is gone, so passing yards may be down.

I didn't intend to "discount" or discredit him; I was merely saying I am not sold on him yet as I am with Wilson, Bray, Murray, others. I don't remember him playing against LSU, Bama, or Georgia this season. His stats aren't overwhelming either, but he played well.

Also, I don't believe I'm blindly elevating Mett. I'm predicting that he'll do well enough to be considered Top 5 in the SEC at the end of next season. Connor Shaw could very well end up in the Top 5 as well. Or he and Mett could be bottom dwellers. It's merely an educated guess.

SC #4

I hope Arkansas never begins over them. It makes the 600+ yds and 45+ we hang on them so much better.
