those 5 star kids that go and sit lose a. year of money making. They may get some that first year, but that second year if they dont get any playing time their market value isn't that high...they'll get a shot just because of their HS rank.
But if they dont get any PT that second year going into Junior year they have to go somewhere to get some playing time and some film...Hopefully they play well enough to transfer as a senior and get a big paycheck.

Doesn't surprise me. Mercenary culture x need for instant gratification x seeing their teammate (usually better) get their pay day.
They get that initial contract to get on campus but start to worry right away that the gravy train is ending if they don't start playing right away.

Austin Mack may have the highest. He only started one year in high school and was still a four star. He can be coached to next level.

I hadn’t thought about it before, but that brings up a really good point. If you are a 4/5 star and want to guarantee playing as a freshman, go to a small school and start right away, and then transfer to where you really want to go after a season.
i hate that that is what college football has become, but until some guardrails are put in place (like 3 years contracts with a school) it’s actually a smart strategy for recruits.
