Mississippi State is below .500 all-time.
True, but they've been competitive over the last 20 years. If I'm giving Nebraska elite category but they've been dogshit for 20 years, I'm giving Mississippi State at least middling, because they've been at least good enough to make 13 straight bowl games.

Nebraska will turn out to be a fantastic addition once this media market/cable tv era finally dies. They are a great example of the point I am getting at. I bet they'll have 10 times the number of subscribers that Rutgers generates despite sitting in a market with less than 1/20th of the population. Nebraska also has natural rivalries to build with Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, which will generate subscriptions and viewers from other fans as well. By contrast, only the most diehard of fans will pay to watch Maryland-Rutgers. And there aren't many diehard college football fans in that part of the country to begin.
Brand matters and always has. That is how the Shorthorns and Oklahoma just got here. Nebraska will be back.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!
I basically agree with the OP almost word for word. Good post.
And btw, one would have to be insane to think that the SEC won't match the B1G coin for coin much sooner than later.

I'll make it short for you.
Mike Slive won the prior round of expansion, hands down. However, he screwed up in locking the SEC into too long of a deal with ESPN.
On the surface, adding OU and Texas is a lot better than adding USC and UCLA, but the question now is whether or not we really needed to add OU and Texas, setting off a restructuring of college football that might not look so good down the road (Sankey should have called their bluff because there was no way OU and Texas were going to the Big Ten as long as ESPN had a contract with Texas for the LHN). I tend to think Sankey got bluffed into making a defensive expansion. It's not a bad move on the surface, but reducing the Big XII and Pac to peonage is not going to be good for college athletics in the long run.

Likely, but it has been one unbelievably long dry spell for that program.

Texas would have 100% ended up in the B1G if the SEC had declined to invite them. I'm not sure about Oklahoma, the B1G puts a frankly ridiculous amount of emphasis on academics/AAU and media markets. Oklahoma is not impressive on either front. But why do you think the B1G would expand to Southern California but would not expand to Austin, Texas to capture the wealthiest football program in the country? That Longhorn Network deal ran through 2031 and had about $120mm left in value. That's an amount of money that Texas and/or the B1G would happily part with in exchange for the longterm gain.
So I tend to agree that adding Texas and OU was a bit of a defensive expansion, but it was the logical one for the SEC in terms of being the biggest, baddest conference in the country over the long run. As much as the idealists around here want the SEC to be a little 10-team league, it would be overrun financially in this climate. I too would love the old Big Eight days, but that ain't happening.

Wait, wut? More a middling any given year.

Nebraska had 6 10-win seasons since Osborne. They also had 7 9-win seasons at that same time. That's 13 years where they weren't someone's doormat and didn't have Tom Osborne.

Most revenue in the SEC, elite recruiting, big population base, big school. If they could ever put it together, they could win a chip.

A well-thought-out, well-written post that actually makes a point, supports it with evidence, and postulates a likely future scenario based off realistic expectations? Talk about casting your pearls before swine around this shithole.
Still, nice work, OP.

But them having a vastly overrated coach who sucks is the killer coup de gras.

The day I quit watching college football is coming.
I’m a long way off, but almost every major move has made the game appealing to me.
EXPANSION: I’m not a fan. Give me regional rivalries all day long. LSU v FSU is perfect for a 2-game series, but I don’t want stuff like that to replace a game with Ole Miss.
PORTAL: not bad in theory, but it sucks combined with…
NIL: again…not bad in theory, but the NCAA lost complete control over this.
“STUDENT ATHLETES”: I wish we had more kids that gave a shite about their universities and were part of the crowd of your everyday undergrads.
PRICING: I realize prices will go up, but pricing out the average fan in favor of every cent imaginable will push folks further away.
I could go on.
