Judging from the records of both teams during that stretch, if they had played, Bama would be up about another 35+ games in the series.

Yeah you look through my post history. I shite on everything Tennessee and rarely even talk about auburn. Because a lot of my friends are auburn fans there is very little true hate. I really do hate the Vols and have not missed a TSiO since the early 90s. I never go to Jordan Hare anymore. Just watch it on tv when it's away. But keep on keeping on with that bullshite.

Last 25 years Bama has only one rival in the SEC.

AU's main rival is UGA: "The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry"
We also play 2 in state rivals this year: Alabama and Alabama A&M

Bama hates Auburn's fans. Every team in the south has dumb redneck fans that take football too serious and embarrass the fan base.
Auburn actually has fans with the means and know how to hire private investors to get tax returns of Bama players parents. They follow Bama players around taking photos of cars and anything of value they feel a Bama player couldn't have obtained legally. They compile "evidence" and send packets to the NCAA and media outlets. Truly disgusting people who hate Bama more so than love Auburn.
Bama fans hate Tennessee's football team and former administration. The rivalry was actually at one point respectable up until Fulmer got outbid and turned Secret witness.
It also depends on where you live in the state and how old you are.

Auburn is bigger because we live with those instate pricks.
Tennessee has been the bigger game as far as our national aspirations went over time. Yes, yes, I know the mellinials are like, what?
Yes, not the last 10 years but over our history UT was our biggest threat to losing a regular season game. Whoever won that game was gonna win the SEC. Auburn had their moments... that question is tough to answer.
For me, NOTHING, NOTHING beats beating Aubie. I also know we have to beat UT in conference.
I do soooo hate both though.

Honest question (no troll): Has Auburn ever put up a streak on y'all the way Tennessee has before? And if not, do you think that's why you hate us more?
To me, Neyland and Bear made this game special and said it was the measuring stick for where the respective teams were. I agree with that wholeheartedly. Other UT and Bama coaches have carried on that tradition and hat's off to the UT and Bama coaches who've always pointed to it. We've always known it can run in cycles but I think people forget that this was a game where humongous fan brawls were common even in the 80s and 90s. Hell the first TSIO was tie that ended with fans fighting over it.
As much as I've hated on UF, I don't know of a single massive brawl that's broken out during those games. Maybe a handful but we're not talking massive brawls in that case just the usual.

Depends on where you live and how well the other team (AU or UT) is playing/ranked somewhat, but an in-state rival will typically be the main one.
Also, when AU used to be the last game of the season, other than the bowl game, and before the introduction of the SECCG and playoffs, it was a lot bigger rivalry because it was the one that stuck with you through the off season.
Lastly, when it was actually the "Iron Bowl" and played in Birmingham, with a 50/50 ticket split, it seemed more intense.
But that could just be the selective romanticizing of fond childhood memories.
Honestly though, with the success The University is having, the next conference game on the schedule or whoever is the biggest threat is the biggest game. This, along with the hiring of Saban with his previous ties to LSU, caused this game to become a bigger game than it has historically been (similar to how UF was when Spurrier and Meyer/Tebow were winning and playing UA almost annually in the SECCG). However an LSU (or UF) team that's not a threat reduces this game back to being of no more importance than Miss St or any other random SECW team.
Beating UT or AU won't make it a successful season if The University doesn't win the SECCG, but losing to them can cost a coach his job.
tl;dr Basically what others have said:
