Alabama doesn't have to CLAIM the 1973 title, they were AWARDED a title by the UPI. They were actually given a trophy for their championship season that says, "UPI 1973 College Football National Champions" (or some such).
When either the UPI/Coaches Poll or AP Sportswriters' Poll gives you a trophy as college football national champions, what the frick are you going to do, say, "No thanks"??? No, you put it in your fricking trophy case and count it.
