re: Do you think Lea is a legitimately good coach or did he catch lightning in the bottle?

Clark Lea is an outstanding coach by any measure.
He won 9 games in his first 3 seasons. He’s won 13 in the next season and a half.
That instant improvement directly corresponds to him getting Kill and Pavia. He’ll do fine next year if he keeps Kill. If he doesn’t, he’s probably headed back to his first 3 years type of performance.

I think Lea is learning a lot from Kill that will serve him well for the future. This rapid an improvement is of course a function of Kill, Beck, Pavia and Stowers. But Lea was smart enough to know what he didn’t know and went out to find what he needed. Our recruiting is going to be incredible with NIL and all the publicity so hopefully we can stay in the top half of the SEC for a while. Exciting times for us.

I think he's a good coach who found a great QB

He’s a better football coach than Capn Ed, Chud Chewin Les, and Last Achor Down Dude Jerry combined.
So was the yankee bitch Kelly.

Is BK a good coach ?Can BK catch lightning in a bottle and beat Western Kentucky ? That would get us to a bowl.

He's an excellent coach. So is Brent Key. Both alums, both doing pretty impressive things.
So you don't think Kirby is one too?

NIL and the transfer rule change also made in impacts.
Drinkwiz also did the same thing.

Both. He can identify talent that no one else wants, and he seems to develop game plans to attack other teams weaknesses.
Coaching is so funny. You have to acquire talent, develop talent, be a culture fit, motivate players to work hard in the off season, motivate players to prepare properly in season....some coaches can do some of these things, very few can tick all the boxes. Lea could also be benefitting from being at a program that other teams take lightly because of historical ineptitude...it's a perfect storm sort of thing.

He has elevated every aspect of that team from a pereneal bottom dweller. It’s not just Pavia though he is a big part of their success the defense is solid. The play calling is dynamic.

Jerry Kill also.
I think as long as kill is there to help they are going to be tough

The offense coordinator also left after he went to the NFL. Plus LSU went 9-4. Not that good of a record.

His best season at Vandy prior to 2024 was 5-7.
2021: 2-10
2022: 5-7
2023: 2-10
I’m not saying Lea is a “bad coach,” but I think it’s a risk to hire him at this point if you’re a major program. I think I would want to see how he does the next couple of years before I considered him a potential candidate.

There were a lot of us that wanted to make a change after the 2-10 season two years ago. The coordinators were crap.
Thankfully, Lea looked at the situation and saw that it needed to change. He fired a couple of friends and went out and found the guys to make it work.
Derek Mason, along with the previous school administration left this program in shambles. They were more concerned with DEI type goals than winning games. It came from the top down.
A new university president came in and decided that athletics were worth investing in. Lea was given the resources needed to get things on the right track. His goal is to build the football program into what the baseball program is and he’s being given the resources to make it happen.
Vandy’s NIL is still near the bottom of the league though. They’re working on it and more money is starting to come in. Big donors just needed to see that the administration was serious about winning for the first time in a very very long time.
