You hear this argument a lot, but most people seem to overlook the fact that you can also make the opposite argument just as easily. That is, thanks to the large tourney and the autobids, teams have significantly more control over their destinies. You can be eliminated from contending for the CFB crown before you even get chance to give it your best shot. How many times has the CBB title gone to a team that wasn't one of the top 4 (or 8) going into the post-season? In football, these teams literally couldn't have won the title because they wouldn't have been allowed to compete for it.

Yes, but that's not the argument. Fluking your way into a championship is not dominating a sport.

I was responding to the point being made -- that the 64 team tourney makes CBB more difficult -- by pointing out it also gives programs more opportunity to play for the title. I only mentioned the "flukes" to note that CBB has more leeway in pursuit of the title. (I gave my analysis of the original question separate from your specific argument earlier in the thread)

Way harder to dominate consistently in basketball, no doubt. Notice how no team has really ever done it outside of UCLA in the 60s and 70s. Small team size and high turnover.

Do you mean win national titles? Probably football.

If you mean "dominate" as routinely win a bunch of games and make it far regularly (let's say elite 8s or CFBP) I'd say it's basketball no question.

With basketball there's only 5 dudes on the court. You can have 4 ok/average/pretty good guys and 1 super star lottery pick and with even halfway competent coaching make the tourney. At that point you've only gotta win like 3 games and you're in business. Having 1 stud in basketball can truly be the difference in a sweet 16 and a losing record. Rarely and I mean RARELY does 1 player in cfb have that much sway.

Dominance in Basketball shouldn’t really be measured by national titles but rather regular season conference titles.

I would say Basketball is a bit harder as you have a longer season, a full tourney, and your players can realistically only be with you for one season.

I honeslty think that's a point in basketball's favor. You can lose 10 games and still make the tourney and from there it's a clean slate.

In football if you lose more than 1 you've essentially excluded yourself from the playoff.

Football because you don't have to win 6 straight post season games to win a national title.

To counter that though, you could literally go winless and not win a single game in 20+ tries in CBB, then win about 9 in a row and be national champs.

Eh agree and disagree. Baseball is a tougher sport to recruit and the postseason is comparable to basketball. However, fewer programs care about baseball than basketball and football. And even the increased parity we see now in baseball is a fairly new thing in the past 10-15 years.

You can build a championship basketball team in 1 year.
But so can every other team the next year, and your team would be gone.

It's harder to build a dominate football team, but easier to keep

Baseball is unique because the program is only as good as that day's starting pitcher.

Good Question

All depends upon how you might define "dominate."

Now, had you worded it differently, say "consistently contend for P5 and National championships."

I dunno, are we talking year in and year out or just for a season or academic year or two?

That's very true, but baseball also doesn't have any single elimination format like basketball does so you're at least afforded a chance to lose a game. Obviously weird things happen like Fresno State winning the CWS as a 4 seed in a regional, but regardless baseball, unlike other sports, affords a bad game. Last year, for instance, 5 of the national seeds made it to Omaha

I don't think that's really a counter so much as furthering my post unless I'm misinterpreting you.

It's easier to build up a basketball program than it is in football, it's much tougher to win national titles in basketball due to the NCAA tournament.

Football is easier. Basketball is harder to keep good players year in and year out and you have to beat more teams to win a NC.

Definitely football. The talent pool is much and you’re set if you own the majority.
