Well it does matter because we're talking about a national anthem. One played at a public event that's unaffiliated with the government is quite different than one that is affiliated with the government. IOW, it's a different case when we're arguing about how an Olympic athlete behaves (because they do represent the US) versus just about any other sporting scenario both pro and college.

I would disagree. As someone that spent a good chunk of their live playing sports, an anthem was generally expected. And being both present and standing was obligatory. You were expected to stand for your anthem, and an opponent’s anthem and a host nations anthem as they were played. If only 1 anthem is played you stood for it. It didn’t matter if it was a diplomatic friendly match or a rec league game. All athletes know and understand that you are going to be there and standing. If that not something you are comfortable doing then stick to informal pickup games.

Listen if the national anthem is played during a game and you are in attendance, you should show respect, period. That is my opinion, and I will not support anyone or any team who is disrespectful toward it. I don't hate them, I just disagree and I am not spending my money or my time on them.

UofSC is a government funded and chartered school. They are obligated to be present and stand even under your interpretation.

I can see your point, but in this case it was for the national championship, so I would think it very relevant. Otherwise why would they care about winning the championship of a nation they have no respect for?

You could make this "argument" for literally any event or competition that happens, but we only do it for certain sporting events. We don't sing it for academic competitions. We don't sing it before the Oscars. We don't play it for golf or tennis. I guess if an American wins the masters this weekend he isn't really a patriot if he doesn't bust into song upon sliding into that green jacket.

I don't stand for a song either... but I'll stand for the National Anthem. Then again, if i feel the need or desire to affect change then I'll do by starting with my local representative or whomever. I'd stand and emphasize that while i may disagree with this or that.... I'm still proud of this country and yes, we still need to fix it.

So no, I'm not standing for song.

They did for highschool and college debates in the mid 90s.

Tennis tournaments do US open

College golf tournaments do the national anthem before starting.

But you are missing the point entirely. It isn't about whether or not they should be playing the National Anthem. It is a matter of if it is played respect should be shown.

It's like manners and respect. If a woman walks into a room, a gentleman should stand. Does he have to? No. Should he? Yes. It is respect. In today's world we are forgetting...or totally doing away with all respectful things, including respect for each other. And that goes right back to part of the reason the protests are occurring. A basic lack of respect for each other and human life in general.

Dawn Staley is an American woman paid $2.9 million dollars a year. To coach a sport in which 95% of American society doesn't give a shite about.

She should be thankful that such an opportunity exists, in our country. Instead she chooses to act like a miserable, ungrateful bitch.

Let’s see, she thanked God for like 5 minutes during the trophy presentation. She thanked her boss Ray Tanner, the university president, the team, the fans, even the practice squad.

Who else should she thank so that you’re satisfied?

Why did she thank God? My guess is because he gave her the ability to coach well and win a championship.

Why did she thank them? Again. My guess is they gave her the opportunity to coach and do something she loves to do and make a very comfortable living.

Doesn't it seem odd that she thanked everybody except the country that gives her freedom, and opportunity? Instead she shows a lack of respect for that country, it's flag, National Anthem and the freedoms and opportunities that country provides for her?

You….want her to thank the United States of America? It this the Miss America contest?

Did Bill Self thank the USA when he got the trophy last night?

Oh, I uphold her right to free speech. I'm just saying that if she truly was looking to make a statement she should have boycotted the tournament altogether, and she shouldn't be working in a government-subsidized university if she's so opposed to it.

I think what she did was cowardly, if her intention was to make a point. However, it has been said in this thread that she wasn't looking to do that, but rather simply just trying to stay in routine with the team.

That sounds more like something she would do, although at the same time she is all in on playing the victim.

It’s worth pointing out, again, that UConn and Stanford were not on the court for the anthem in their game either.

Why is it only an issue for South Carolina?

It wasn’t in protest, or they wouldn’t have come out for the championship game.

Either way, no. No I don’t. Winning forgives all. Shane Beamer could wipe his arse with the American flag if it meant even an SEC championship.

I mean you are right.

However, if you are purposely not doing it when it's normal to do so otherwise, you're kind of making a statement that you don't.
