“Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007. The numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O’Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports.”
Glad LSU did this or your right eventually you run out

Clemson got on board with a few other programs that started taking numbers out of retirement and putting commemorative logos honoring special players that wore a specific jersey.
Deshaun Watson wanted #4 which was a long retired number from Clemson legend Steve Fuller from the 1970's when he put Clemson on the map again. They actually got Fuller's blessing and DW got to wear #4 and the rest is history. I must say is was pretty damn cool seeing that number on the field again.
If a top recruit wants a number he should at least have the opportunity to get that if another player isn't using it.

It depends. For a player that has an outstanding career. No, not really. For a player that passes away unexpectedly or has some other tragedy befall them (like a spinal injury). I would be ok with that.

There are only 99 numbers available
This just isn't true. There are 99x2. Many times a player will wear the same number as another player....duplicate numbers usually play on opposite sides of the ball because they can't be on the field at the same time.

In college sports? No.
In pro sports? Yes. When a guy plays a long successful career (HOF, titles, MVP, multiple All Pro/NBA/Silver Slugger, etc) for mostly one team it makes sense.

Yea, I like the idea of making that # special/unique much more so than retiring it.

It always makes me LOL when people say they hate pro sports because of Free Agency
When realistically a great player can play on your team for 15+ years
While college sports a guy plays 3-4 maybe 5 years there (shite and in some cases 1-2)

At least there are contracts in pro sports. College guys can leave anytime. I’m pretty Tate Martel is on his 4th team in the last 3 years or something stupid like that.

2 was Sterling Sharpe who is not known as being the nicest guy in the world. He's been asked many times to let a specific player (Alshon Jeffery) asked to wear the number and he refused.
They ask him?

His right I guess
Uh, no it isn't his "right", it's a privilege the university extends to him. The university can issue whatever number they want to anyone they want - within the rules of the game. Retired numbers are not within the rules of the game.

When you go in Bama's locker room, on each locker of the players number they list all the All Americans that wore that number.
That is really cool too

No, because if we retired the noteworthy Bama numbers, the incoming players would have triple digit numbers.
Just for starters...
2, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 22, 37, 47, 52, 54, 55, 57, 60, 73, 77, 82, 91, 93, 97
Henry, Jones, Cooper, Teague and soon to be Tua, McCarron, Namath/Stabler, Hutson, Musso/Ingram, Alexander, Lowe, Gilmer, Jordan, Thomas, Stephenson, Samuels, Hannah, Krauss, Newsome, Baumhower, Lyons, Bennett.
All could make a case for being retired. Maybe more.

Trivia question...no Googling:
Who was the only professional athlete to have his number retired while he was still an active player?
