Most UT fans I know were glad to get rid of him.

Chief can't cover spread. 07 Florida game was one of most unprepared defense's i've ever seen. Truly terrible.

He also played terrible covereges. In 08 UCLA games they have like a third string QB and what do we do? Our corners play at least ten yards off recievers. The entire fourth quarter they didn't throw a pass past 5 yards deep and marched down the field and scored the winning touchdown. I've never been more ticked at a coach in my life as i was chavis. He always done that. If it wasn't for all our talent in 90's and early 2000's he would have been gone a long time ago.

You guys keep talking "coverage" when you should be talking "points".

Since 1998, only one John Chavis coached defense has allowed more than 20 points per game.

Chavis

I'm guessing the one year he didn't was 2007?

I hate to keep comparing The Chief to Monte, but it's warranted as Monte followed him and has yet to average under 20 PPG as a college defensive coordinator.

Chief had his moments at TN but like Fulmer, he overstayed his welcome here. They don't call it 3rd and Chavis for nothing!

And say what you will about the numbers. Unless you watched every UT game over the past 10 years (I have), you would feel exactly the same way.

My Tennessee brethren have already made this point, but the answer to this question is no.

I liked Chavis, but sometimes his defenses could be maddening (see second half of LSU 2001, last drive of Georgia 2001, last drive of UCLA 2008, 2007 vs Bama when he refused to cover DJ Hall, etc).

I'd love to have him back. Most TN fans just saw the struggles we had with FL, and the 3rd and Chavis situations, not the whole picture. In truth, we just lacked the talent, specifically at DL(LB some years-hello starting MLB Robert Peace) to really run his scheme well. The over all product of his defenses was great though. Basically like someone said though, his buddy Phil was fired and he was left looking for a job. Les was smart to grab him, esp with the talent you guys have on D each year.

The bad thing with Chavis is that he doesn't go out and recruit, or at least he didn't at TN(not sure about LSU).

Totally agree here. The defensive talent he has in Baton Rouge now rivals what he had at Tennessee in their glory days. And we LSU fans have never seen LB play like we are seeing now.

We had plenty of talent back in the 90s when Spurrier quipped that his favorite play against Tennessee was 3rd and long

We also had loads of talent in 2001, arguably a more talented UT team than the '98 squad, and we still got the Georgia debacle and the crap versus LSU in the SEC title game, when we appeared mystified by the QB draw.

No we hate Saban, and with good reason.

Betrayed? They essentially fired him. Why would they feel betrayed that he got another job?

Well we LSU fans had a lot of respect for him in 2005 when he shut down our offense after halftime.

What he's doing now...it's working. And he hasn't been getting a lot of help from the offense here. His defense has been left out on the field a lot.

Any improvement on offense this year for LSU will make our defense look that much better.

It isn't like that at all actually, but continue being bitter. It's what you guys seem to do best.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's a bad DC, he isn't. He's very good. His defenses were just frustrating sometimes, and in late-game situations with a lead we tended to collapse too frequently.

It is NOTHING like that. Even if you want to use your allegory (and I find it ridiculous), the girl would have moved back to town to find YOU are already married to another.

I remember watching UT vs Arky in 2007, when Chavis just shut them completely down. His game plan was much better than Pelini's, injuries notwithstanding.

See, that's what I'm talking about. The defensive gameplan against Arkansas that year was an absolute work of art. I thought for sure we were going to have to win a shootout, but we just completely immobilized them.

So we can do that to Arkansas but not a mediocre Bama. THAT'S frustrating

I didn't know this. I also didn't know that TN was pretty sick of him. TBH i didn't follow football very closely (aside from watching the games) until about 2 yrs ago.

Personally I think he's done a solid job at LSU, and people generally have a high opinion of him, so I'd assumed he'd done well at TN.

Sorry for being retarded. Herp derp.

And as far as the Saban thing goes, maybe the entire LSU fanbase doesn't hate him, but i guaran-damn-tee you that there's a big percentage of them that do. Anyone who denies that apparently can't read a t-shirt and has no memory of his first trip back to BR.

good DC or not, he lost his job and he needed to find another one. not one bit bitter about Chavis. Good luck to him. I think he's a good DC.

I don't think a lot of your fellow LSU fans understand that Saban would probably be in Baton Rouge right now if the job had been available when he decided to end the NFL experiment.
