The phrase is yes but it’s transition to an idiom for discussing non religious topics didn't take place until mid 1700s to early 1800s

Consider the following true statements:
OJ Simpson murdered Nicole.

CLK is a serial man-whore.
Some stupid LSU poster will immediately play “devil’s advocate”, as if it’s noble.
