Derek Mason found his lost list, will be better prepared this season

“I had a sheet that I had been looking for for the last 18 months,” Mason said. “Lo and behold, about two weeks ago, it popped up. I found it in my library of football books.”
“I had already gone through that list and really remembered a couple of items on there that needed to be checked off,” Mason said. “Now, I feel really good about what we’re doing and where we’re at.”
He noted that the ‘gameday checklist’ he has produced for this season includes 65 items “and it covers everything I need to know.”

I wonder how many of those items are "stare vacantly while the tire fire consumes your program"? I would imagine it would be at least on 5 or 6 of the line items having watched him last year.

This is a non-story. If you saw the presser, you would realize he was joking about the importance of this particular list. Your second quote is also inaccurate.

It was a 65-point checklist. He was out of his depth last year, but the lack of THIS physical checklist was not it. In context, it's explained as essentially a list of situations like 4th downs and chances to go for 2 point conversions. Obviously, a coach just doesn't forget that sort of thing. Mason was smiling and laughing through the story.
He has absolutely cleaned up his media presence a ton. From SEC Media Days through all of the pre-season interviews and press conferences, CDM has improved dramatically. If the team has improved as much as his public speaking, watch out.
