Not a chance in hell.
Birmingham is beyond broke.
Too close to Nashville/Atlanta
Most football fans in Alabama are obsessed with college athletics.

This is inaccurate. The Birmingham metro is identical in size to New Orleans, and has more corporate headquarters and regional offices, and has a higher level of affluence.
The biggest problem with Birmingham is that...it's Birmingham. Not much to attract a crowd, limited airline travel there, boring as hell.

Forget about whether the state could support it. No franchise in Nashville, Atlanta, or New Orleans is going to just sit idle, while a club is brought to Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, or Huntsville.

football yes.
Green Bay is not a big city.

Never thought about it from that perspective, but yea I could see pro owners in all of those cities fighting against it, because they all have a piece Alabama's market right now.

Could it? Yes. Would it? Probably not.
Because Bear Bryant told the in 1967 that Alabama didn't need a pro team, and well.....45 years later guess what?

Green Bay represents Milwaukee and in many ways an entire region. Many fans in Iowa and other Midwest states without a team root for the Packers. Also, the Packers have been there forever. It would be tough for an NFL team in Alabama to establish a following with the Saints, Falcons and Titans already well established close by.

There is plenty of money in Birmingham, just not Jefferson County....
They would have to get all the municipalities around B'ham to contribute...i.e. Hoover, Vestavia, Trussville, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Chelsea, Pelham, etc....

Birmingham had its chance to be a major player in the region decades ago. It should have went the route of Nashville and Jacksonville, in using a consolidated city-county government. That made a massive difference for those two cities, and ultimately their ability to attract businesses as well as professional sports teams.

Football- No
Baseball- Probably
MLB, NHL, NBA, MLS- Possibly
It would be weird seeing Bama fans and Auburn fans rooting for the same team though.

Mizzou has 5.7 and 2 teams ,Louisiana has less people and a team.Nashville -football LMAO.Jacksonville -NFL LMAO. The reason Birmingham never got a team was crooked pols.with no fore sight. The same reason we passed on the regional airport that went to Atlanta.
Not to be "that guy" or anything, but Missouri has 6.0 million with 5 pro sports teams. (Kansas City- Chiefs and Royals. St Louis- Rams, Cardinals, Blues) Technically Sporting KC (MLS) is across the state line since they hopped the border in 07, but one could argue there are 6 pro teams for Missouri.
The downside to having basically 1 pro sports team per 1 million people is that it has a negative impact on attendance at Mizzou sporting events. If I were a resident of Alabama, I'd rather keep pro sports out and stick with college like they've done.

Birmingham has a better population the N.O. and as for the NHL,Birmingham would have been a great NHL city by now if we had made the merger in 79 ,we had 3 hall of famers plus I think Nappier ,we would have won an NHL title soon IMO . But you would have a harder time now.
NFL would sell out we were selling 75 k a year when we won the first WFL title in the early 70s and about 70 k in the USFL.
To think a state with 5 Million cant sell out 70 k seats to the NFL is CRAZY
New Orleans is a larger metro area than Birmingham and is only 70 miles away from B.R. which has about 800K people in their metro area. Before you bring up Huntsville let me remind you that it is only half the size of Baton Rouge and about as close to Birmingham as it is to Nashville. Also don't believe that Mobile would support a Birmingham based team over the much closer one in New Orleans.

The New Orleans and Birmingham metro areas are virtually the same size.
New Orleans - 1,235,650 (2010 census)
Birmingham - 1,212,848 (2010 census)
Though, Birmingham doesn't have another metro area as close as Baton Rouge is to New Orleans. The Tuscaloosa metro area is only 240,000.
