I will say no. Football would be the best chance but I still think it would fail miserably. I think a lot of it has to do with the population being so spread out unlike most places that support one. Atlanta has a diverse, large population around Atlanta.

Definitely not NBA or NHL. Almost certainly not MLB. Some argue that Pro Football could work, but I seriously doubt it.

There are 11 states in the SEC. Six of them (by my count, might have missed one) have pro teams.
Just sayin'

NHL? WTF? There are way too many NHL teams in warm weather cities that doesn't care about hockey. Why would hockey add another one? I think MLS is a pretty realistic possibility though.

the only sport that would be possible would be the NFL. i'm not sure birmingham has a large enough population that makes decent money nor a large enough corporate base to consistently sell the tickets and luxury boxes. losing steel was a huge blow to it's economy. but if the area got the fever it could probably support an NFL team. but it might be hazardous unless they were winning.

They'd start out like Houston. I rather a pro baseball team in LA.

From the responses I'm getting, it seems the fact that Alabama doesn't have a pro team is less of a state issue and more to do with how fricked up Birmingham is atm.
Amirite?

How many of them are profitable?
I'll give you the Saints. And I wasn't including TX or MO. Those states are much more populated than average in the SEC and have much more diverse populations.
The original SEC states always have and probably always will be college athletics oriented. You're not going to get anyone to care more about pro sports than college.

No way. Bham can't support an nfl team and that's the only viable city.
NHL - huntsville doesn't care about sports
MLB - the braves are middling attendance in atlanta
NBA - most cities with an nba team wouldn't sign up again

mobile could have an NHL team

Yes, I'm including TX & MO because they are in the SEC in spirit, if not in fact.
I foresee a professional team in KY sooner rather than later. Louisville deserves one IMO.

As someone from Louisville, I sure hope not. Most people here don't want one, except possible MLB. No one cares about NBA here, and NFL wouldn't work because I don't think Louisville could or would support 3 football teams (UK/UL/NFL).

Birmingham just declared bankruptcy. We'll never get a pro team without a pro stadium, and we're never getting that without a different sort of politician in Bham.
No. That was Jefferson County. Birmingham is ok financially. Silly as it sounds, the two governments are in no way related except sharing a portion of the area.
Alabama's pro sport is NASCAR.

I know when Baton Rouge was being looked at for a possible minor league franchise, the investors concluded there was no way they could compete attendance-wise with LSU baseball.
So I understand how that goes.

you'd better support a minor league team then. are the zephers still in NO? damn good baseball. the demographics necessary to support MLB are just not present in LA. selling 81 games a year, every year, needs a metro area double to triple new orleans size, not to mention the luxury boxes. no, the Saints take all of the fans money and that's not so bad.

B'ham had teams in the WFL, USFL, and WHA which were major leagues at the time competing with the NFL and NHL. The football teams had decent attendance for the leagues at the time, but the problems Jacksonville are having pretty much precludes an NFL team in B'ham even with a new stadium.
I think though that a domed stadium would still be a good idea for B'ham. That way you could have monster truck shows at any time without worrying about the weather.

So many Alabama experts on here in Louisiana.....
The Barons are moving downtown, with BHam building a new down baseball stadium. Despite the Jeffco bankruptcy issues, they have been able to push forward with it.....Hoover was not a good spot IMO for triple A.
I think the banking industry here is strong enough to sponsor a football stadium. Never say never. People said the same thing about Nashville- no interest in pro......
Sadly, BHam proper gives the whole area a bad rep. Over the mountain is where the $$ is. Great area. Schools. Low crime. Affluent. Beautiful.

Yeah, Alabama is tailored for college/minor league sports teams. The fan support for minor league baseball teams in the state of Alabama is fantastic.
