So I thought I'd do a thingy for cost of living in SEC using the housing cost as a basis. I'll use Nerd Wallet Cost of Living calculator and a combined household income of $100,000.00. This number doesn't matter as the calculator reposts as dollars and percentage. I tried it out with different amounts and the change was proportional to all amounts entered. For the Gump posters, this means it doesn't matter what income is entered.
I'll use Athens as originating city as it's close to the middle of housing list, and I'm assuming it's close in size to most of these Podunk burgs of the SEC.

sample of how to read,
Using Athens, Ga. as current city with household income of 100K, you would need $95,887.66 (-4%) to live the same in Austin.
$508,500- Austin, TX.................$95,887.66 (-4%)
$434,400- Nashville, TN............$98,696.09 (-1%)
$412,900- Auburn, AL................$96,088.26 (-4%)
$412,800- Oxford, MS...............$79,037.11 (-21%) used Tupelo, there ain't shite for cities in Miss.
$377,900- Fayetteville, AR.........$97,091.27 (-3%)
$369,200- Knoxville, TN.............$86,158.48 (-14%)
$349,000- College Station, TX...$93,179.54 (-7%) used Houston. BCS is geographical oddity, it's 100 miles from anywhere.
$347,000- Athens, GA................$100,000.00 (base line)
$329,000- Lexington, KY............$92,276.83 (-8%)
$321,000- Columbia, SC............$89,969.91 (-10%)
$297,000- Gainesville, FL..........$90,170.51 (-10%) used Jacksonville
$279,600- Starkville, MS............$79,037.11 (-21%) used Tupelo.
$279,600- Norman, OK..............$81,444.33 (-19%)
$229,000- Columbia, MO...........$90,371.11 (-10%)
$228,900- Tuscaloosa, AL..........$90,571.72 (-9%)
$228,400- Baton Rouge, LA.......$89,969.91 (-10%)
So according to Nerd Wallet, and a selection coincidence, Athens, Ga. is the costliest city to live in of the SEC towns.

Can you add in other factors such as illegals & legal folks of foreign descent, plus the "alternate lifestyle" folks in Austin?

Why? You some kind of weirdo or something?
Posted on 5/19/26 at 8:06 am to Victor R Franko
Weirdos live in Austin.

When they’re not hosting fights and shootings every weekend on 6th Street, they have little gangbangers drive around and shoot at people from their cars.
Not to mention all of the homeless camps and dead bodies popping up in Town Lake on the regular.
You can rent a shoebox downtown for 3k a month though!!!

Not as many illegals, but they definitely have the "alternative lifestyle" stuff in Athens too
Crazy to believe how expensive the city has become. I split $900 a month rent less than 10 years ago & lived right in the middle of town. It was a 2 bed 2.5 bath with a balcony, on Pope St. right off of Baxter. That same place rents for $1900 today

Big cities are terrible in general from what I’ve seen. My daughter is afraid to visit Denver because of all the homeless. Not the same city it was ten years ago

Being one of the first to legalize pot will do that. Who knew?

"You think you're tough for eating beans every day? There's half a million scarecrows in Denver who'd give anything for one mouthful of what you got. They've been under siege for about three months. They live on rats and sawdust bread and sometimes...on each other. At night, the fires from the dead light up the sky. It's medieval."

Because the homeless just love legalized pot
Texas doesn’t have legalized pot, why does Austin have such a high homeless and crime rate?

Do these figures include the value of the Coleman tents under the I-35 in Austin?

You obviously don't know what happened in Denver in the 2010s, but, of course, there is a lot you don't know.

Baw, hate to break it to you…but Austin is light years ahead of that dump called Baton Rouge…I lived there over 30 years ago, it was a dump than is it is 10 times worse today.

lol plz.
LSU doesn’t have needles and human feces riddled all over their campus with shootings every weekend at the bars students frequent.
Nobody gives a frick about north Baton Rouge

Besides a fricking LSU football game, there is no reason to visit Baton Rouge. It’s a fricking shithole. Nothing there worth visiting.

Tigerland is no slouch as far as campus bar violence goes.
It holds its own...

How many homeless murders have taken place on LSU’s campus?
…what about UTranny’s?
Haruka deserved better. Much better.
