Comparing Florida and Alabama defenses statistically, and there were a few surprises.

Alabama definitely seems to have the better fundamentally sound defense in watching games, and Florida still seems to randomly have issues lining up, a Grantham staple in 3 years in Gainesville.

But lets look at the stats. Both Alabama and Florida have played 9 games. For reference, both Alabama and Florida as of this weekend (games vs Arkansas and LSU) will have played the same SEC offenses in the top 7 statistically in the SEC (obviously Florida and Alabama will play in Atlanta). Stats referenced from ESPN stats and SEC Stat Cat.

Total Defense (YPG):
Alabama - 357.0
Florida - 381.0

Passing Defense (YPG):
Alabama - 240.3
Florida - 242.7

Rushing Defense (YPG):
Alabama - 116.7
Florida - 138.3

Passing Yards/Play (YPP):
Alabama - 5.72
Florida - 6.56

Rushing Yards/Play (YPP):
Alabama - 4.15
Florida - 4.83

Sacks (Sacks/Game):
Alabama - 20 (2.2)
Florida - 29 (3.2)

Opp Plays Per Drive:
Alabama - 6.10
Florida - 6.10

Opp Yards per Drive:
Alabama - 30.99
Florida - 35.34

3 and outs forced:
Alabama - 40
Florida - 33

3 and outs forced Percentage:
Alabama - 38.10 %
Florida - 37.50 %

Scoring Drives Allowed:
Alabama - 29
Florida - 29

Scoring Drive Percentage Allowed:
Alabama - 27.62%
Florida - 32.95%

Opponents Passer Rating Allowed:
Alabama - 116.1
Florida - 139.3

I'd be interested in seeing Bama's defensive numbers if you throw out the first 4-5 games.

Stats are much closer than I thought they'd be. It will be an interesting game. I think the key story that those stats don't really tell is that Bama's D has been playing much, much better the second half of the season than they did the first.

Alabama has a poor run defense and a really good secondary. However they give up big plays when teams scheme against their LBs in space... Pitts fixing to eat.

Have not watched FL real close, every time I have seen them play. Seems like they are bad on the back end like Texas A&M. Pretty decent at stopping the run

No doubt, although the same thing could be said about Florida's defense too since the A&M game.

It just doesn't "look" like Florida has been playing better though. But Florida's defense played its best game IMO of the year against Tennessee.

And Bama is simply more sound. Blow an assignment against UGA and we throw the ball off a D-lineman's facemask.....blow one against Bama (which UF is prone to do) and it's a TD.

Would love to see the numbers if you throw out the Ole Miss game.

Looking at scoring offense and defense, Alabama scores 7 points more and gives up 7 points less a game.

Florida gave up 613 yards to Ole Miss, Bama gave up 647.

The numbers wouldn't change that much.

Yea - afraid you can't just "throw out" the game against the best offense we've played to date

Look at the 4th quarter stats to see. That's when the 2nd string is in

Florida fans went from "fire Grantham" to "our defense is just as good as Alabama's" in a matter of weeks. Florida's defense is just as leaky as LSU's and only slightly less leaky than Ole Miss. Who the frick are they kidding.

When did I say any of this? I even added some of my disdain for Grantham in my first post

Bama’s problem is going to be Pitts. Limit him and it’s probably over.

We held him to 2 receptions....problem was their RB's feasted in his wake for what felt like 42 receptions and 1000 yards....

Pitts, running backs on wheel routes, running backs on swing routes, receivers running crosses out of bunch formations.....

We got a lot of things to worry about

Key on Pitts and Toney eats, Key on Pitts and Toney and we throw to Rbs out of the back field. These two Os are just loaded with weapons and coaches who know how to use them. The problem for Florida is we are not as good on D as Bama is and our Ds biggest weakness is the long ball. Which Bama is awesome at.
