Minnesota.

What he said. Up until 1940 this was as dominant a program as there was (unless we set the wayback machine back to the time before the dinosaurs when Yale ruled the earth).

I like to point to people that Nebraska had an umpteen game winning streak against Minnesota - and they still trail in the all-time series.

For a team that will never be back, Nebraska sure is recruiting well.

Had to look it up.

Nebraska beat Minnesota 16 straight times between 1963 and 2012.

They still trail the all time series 31-24-2.

I'm not saying they haven't recruited well. But on the field they only have one division title in the Big Ten. Big whoop. If they are a powerhouse then they would be there more often.

I hate to say never because the CFB landscape changes over time. A lot of powerhouses usually go through a period where the program takes a step back.

Every powerhouse goes through down periods. Nebraska will be back. Count on it.

They're going to get there under Harbaugh. It's pretty much guaranteed.

They might have great seasons in the future just like Notre Dame did in 2012. But they won't be able to sustain it. The recruiting landscape has changed to where college athletes don't have to go to those places anymore to be on TV or go to the draft.

And historically Tennessee took advantage of North Carolina and Virginia for Recruiting. But now NC State, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina are able to split those athletes. As a result Tennessee isn't the powerhouse that Peyton Manning once played in.

Right now you have to look at Northern programs for this. Am I saying that Midwest/NE programs don't have enough talent to win?

No, they do. But now that pie, that used to be cut between three or four programs, is cut between a dozen or more programs. You need someone like Urban Meyer who would recruit Satan himself if it gave him one more win in the regular season to win big up there right now.

As much as it pains me to say this, I'd add Arkansas and (frick them) Texas. Everybody fishes in Texas right now for recruits. When you have multiple teams with big pedigrees cherry picking recruits then the teams that live or die by getting those recruits... tend to die.

Nebraska hasn't really recovered since they fired Frank Solich after a 9-win season.

They HAD to get the coaching hire right after Solich and failed miserably with Bill Callahan. While Bo Pelini made a valiant effort to bring them back, his goonish behavior got him fired, even though he never won fewer than 9 games with them.

The only reason they haven't come back is the shitty hires they've made post Ozborne. Solich wasn't going to return NU to dominance either, and it's been a parade of turds for coaches ever since. Their problems are self inflicted.

Solich at least attempted to pull an R.C. Slocum and continue the momentum that Osborne left him.

Both Callahan and Pelini attempted to fundamentally change the way Nebraska football was played.

I think some of those programs could sustain it IF they find the right pieces again. Coaches and AD's change and the decisions schools make can either help the program excel or fail. Nebraska, ND, and Tennessee is an example. I do agree that the recruiting landscape has changed and the more programs fall, the harder it will be to get back on top.

A&M

With all those claim championships it makes you wonder why they have not won anything mentionable since the British Empire was still an empire

Same thing was being said about Alabama 10 years ago. Or USC in the 80s, Michigan prior to Harbaugh, etc.

The only former power house teams that are guaranteed to never come back are Army, Minnesota, and a few of the Ivy League schools. Everyone else still has a chance.

USC was actually good until the early 90's

Do not remember the exact year but it was when Larry Smith was hired along with Freedom Bowl lost that really shook the confidence of the most Arrogrant fanbase in college football

Yep. It's all about the coach, and there aren't a ton of great ones. There are even fewer competent administrators making hires.
