I could go all the way back to Army. But Army is a little too obvious and has some disadvantages in recruiting that other teams do not have to deal with(although I respect every athlete that chooses to play there)

#1 Nebraska

Remember Oklahoma vs Nebraska? That was the big game every year in the Big 8. That series is now long gone and so is Nebraska. A lot of people thought the Big Ten would only strengthen Nebraska but they have only performed worst since their Big Ten Move. They have only won one division title and haven't won one since the Big Ten redid it's divisions to where they are in the SEC East of the Big Ten Divisions. With teams like Oklahoma State, Baylor, TCU, and Oregon popping up, I think it's safe to say that the team we once knew as one of College Football best is no more.

2. Notre Dame Yes they went to the BCS Title Game in 2012 but what SEC team would not have defeated them? You know Georgia would have dominated them as easily as Alabama did. Notre Dame is located in South Bend Indiana, just south of the Michigan State line. Not an ideal location to recruit. They are almost an afterthought in College Football right now as it is because who right now watches NBC every Saturday? Not me. That's for sure.

3. Tennessee. Some call them one of the "Big Six". Not me. I think it's now the "Big Five" or another team could step up in the next ten years. Tennessee year after year has been hyped up by the media and have ultimately bombed. Their last SEC Championship appearance was in 2007 thanks to them beating Kentucky who Tennessee has beaten every year but one time since 1984. They haven't won a SEC Title since last century. And to top it off they haven't defeated Alabama since 2006. Which as we know Alabama just embarrassed Tennessee in Knoxville this past season.

Honorable Mentions: you could argue Michigan and Miami. But the teams above have done far less.

Thoughts? I'm looking forward to this.

May I ask who your favorite team is? If its not a team from the state of Alabama, or Clemson, then Notre Dame has been most likely been to a National championship more recent than your team

I agree with the list, but Nebraska is the only team on it that I think will never get back to being a national power.

This was supposed to be their year last year yet they finished 3rd in their division.

Michigan State and Ohio State have both owned the series over Michigan the past decade and both have made the College Football Playoff with Ohio State winning it. And if I'm not mistaken Michigan has never made the Big Ten Championship Game.

Good analysis although I think Tennessee will return to Top 10 status. Their issue is the same issue every team in the SEC other than Alabama is facing and that issue is Alabama

Lmao VOLS have more wins, SEC Championships, consensus all Americans, draft picks and bowl appearances than any SEC school besides Alabama.

If LSU can retain Big 6 status after going 58-65 from 1989 to 1999, then Tennessee is in the clear here

Why not? I'm in college, and the only reason I consider Michigan a power is because the media talks about them that way. Ohio State has dominated them this century. If you're going to say Tennessee is no longer a power, then Michigan probably isn't either.

I was listening to to College Sports on XM 84 on the way back from Hoover yesterday and this topic came up. Notre Dame suspends players for 1 year for a 1st offense failed drug test. They were saying this is a big factor in their recruiting players today when a guy can go to the SEC or ACC and get a slap on the wrist until he gets a 3rd offense. The appearance of moral high ground is more important that winning in South Bend. Also they don't have what you would call a football curriculum like Sports administration.

Never is a long time. They'll all "be back" in some form or fashion.
but.. If I were to rate those teams as to what order I think they win their next national championship in, I'd say..
1. Michigan
2. Tennessee
3. Miami
4. Notre Dame
5. Nebraska

LSU is about to take number 2 position away from the Vols. It won't ever be relinquished after that.
