No. He doesn’t have a wallet full of maxed out cards, can afford pay his taxes on time, isn’t forced to lease a car for appearances, and hasn’t said “you know who my daddy is?!” Since junior high.

My personal opinion is Wes Johnson ends up back in MLB eventually.
Wes has said he has no interest in going back to the pros. Enjoys the control and development in college level.
He has been given free rein to build Foley Field in his own image (we will have a couple more expansions in the outfield coming soon; a parking deck is going up beyond left field and they may do some premium seating out there in conjunction. Also planning to move the scoreboard out of right field and expand the standing room only offering out there) and we are giving him ample resources in NIL. Too, while recruiting is a national thing (hell, our best players this year are from TX, NC, CA) the location ends up being a pretty big draw in portal recruiting for guys from GA who left and are looking for a reason to return closer to family.
MSU is more historically prestigious than UGA in baseball to be sure. But prestige alone isn’t going to bully UGA out of a coach who in 2 years has developed a recipe for success; based on the crowds we’ve been drawing this year and the appetite for additional season tickets, we will pony up to keep a good thing going.

"The whole "living in Starkville" thing is outdated"..... It's the truth though. Worse SEC town

First question I would ask if contacted by MS State would be centered around what type of NIL commitment, plans, etc they have specifically towards baseball. Facilities and traditions are great but if you are at a recruiting/NIL disadvantage compared to the rest of the league, winning becomes really difficult. And, that seems to be the case with State across most sports.

Depends on who you ask. Some people like rural areas ands some people like dodging bullets in dirty cities.

You can call me Wes, or you can call me Skip, or you can call me WJ or you can call me SJ, but you donts have to call me Johnson

another key factor, if he has a family, how old are the kids? Starkville doesn't have much to add to education. Even the private school is bad. Have a decent private school about 30 minutes away, but then you are telling everybody starkville sucks, I am sending my kids half an hour down the road.

we are not devoid of talent even in the current NIL system. we have had consistent top recruiting classes (without looking, probably averaging around 15th), its the coaching and pitching that has been amiss lately. fundamental baseball flew out the door since the departure of the world series winning core, which largely was NOT recruited by Lemonis.

The dude has always had that kind of weirdness about it, and the new one even more so. Cram a ton of people in the outfield and on grass berms or standing room only areas…. Only for the actual chair backs to be 50% capacity for about 90% of home games.
A lot of those in the Left Field Lounge have chairback season tickets.

You couldn’t pay me to live in Mississippi. Going to be a lot more challenging than you think if a guy is comfortable at a place like chapel hill.

Both of the Oregon coaches are excellent, and Canham is going to listen with budget woes coming for OSU.
Goss is so tiny. When you see OSU up close it’s incredible what Pat Casey did at Oregon State. Their campus is beautiful though.
Can tell from first hand experience fans couldn’t care less at UO at baseball, but like I tell SEC baws about Dan Lanning-he has 1/10th the pressure of an SEC job with great facilities and an amazing area to live in.

Getting baseball talent to Starkville has not been our problem.
The Bulldogs led all college programs with 11 players selected in the 2024 MLB Draft, headlined by switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje going No. 15 overall to the Seattle Mariners.

Even the private school is bad.

As a LSU fan since before Skip ,MissSt had the premier program in the SEC.They have a great program and deserve a great coach. They are above a assistant coach and should be able to hire a sitting HC.I think they hire either Johnson from Ok or the Kentucky coach.

Interested to see who they get. I think Wes Johnson is a pipe dream but the others are possible.

State has the best ballpark in the country and probably the second best fan following behind LSU. In no universe would any of these mentioned be lateral or a step down to go to state
I think he is saying a lateral move for State. As in none of these coaches are a vast improvement over Lemonis. Which I would agree with.

Our interim will win a series and we’ll just make him permanent.
