Isn't muscle, in n this case, a misspelling of mussel? I've always heard it was mussel shoals because of the number of freshwater mussels that were found in and around the shoals of the river.

Looks like we got ourselves a badass in this thread. Putting people down and wiping out lineages.

The list and range of genres of those that literally made Pilgrimages to Fame Recording studio to cut an album or record a song is impressive.

Recorded there originally but they moved to RCA before they were released, I believe

It’s a great weekend trip. The studio tours are badass (you can pee in the bathroom where Keith Richards wrote wild horses, and/or see the piano where free bird was written, among plenty of other things) and then Florence has some decent bars and restaurants because of UNA.
Highly recommend you watch the documentary before you go. It’s an incredible story.

That sounds right because most of their Muscle Shoals stuff was released retro.

Muscle shoals wanted them badly and knew they were going to be a hit, but I think they couldn’t get the financials worked out.

Highly recommend the documentary, if anyone is interested in this.
"Muscle Shoals" (The River that Sings) <-- whole movie on YouTube (1:51)

An excellent documentary about the legendary recording studio where much of the 60s R&B sound was recorded. Hit makers who recorded there talk about the experience of the music magic that occurred, including Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, Eta James, Candi Staton, Alicia Keys, Bono, Keith Richards, and Mick Jagger.
Set on the banks of the Tennessee River in northern Alabama, the Native Americans called it "The River that Sings." Find out why, in this excellent and heart-warming story about a major moment in American popular music.

You should watch the documentary titled Muscle Shoals. You will be amazed who all recorded in that small Alabama town and which amazing hits came out of there

Alabama men are the most effeminate, per capita, in the world. So no.
Never knew how many rabid far left Alabama/Auburn fans there were until I joined this site. My gosh there are a ton of them.

quote:This is correct, but "muscle" isn't a misspelling in this case because the town was named before the spelling of mussel became standardized. "Muscle" was an acceptable way to spell the name of that mollusk at the time.

I just watched that documentary. Wow is all I can say. I was born and raised in Alabama, lived here all my life. What a great tribute. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and I had never heard that it was supposed to be "Mussel", not "Muscle". LOL.

There is debate about that. Without the dam and TVA projects, that stretch of water would have been a huge whitewater rafting draw today.
It was a bottle neck and one of the key fording sites, which brings a lot of Civil War history to the area as well.
Some have said it was because of the Muscle it took to cross the shoals in that area.
But, I think the mussels are very much more likely.
Tons of history in the Shoals area between Tuscumbia, Sheffield, Muscle Shoals and Florence.
