Their last run, UGA/AU/Bama/Clemson was terrible. That was their recruiting hotbed. I dont see all four sucking at the same time again.

I think it's certainly possible but it's going to take the right hire. This upcoming coaching search might just be the most important in Tennessee Football history; if they botch it they might be done. If they hit it out of the park, they have a chance to get back to playing championship-level football.

You hit a really good point. In the 90s on their strong run, UGA, Clemson, Bama to some extent were all down. Tennessee was pulling the top recruits from all over. That is not happening anymore. They need to make a slow steady comeback. They are not well run.

They still have national weight with their name alone

Yes they can get back.

it will take more than just the right hire. They need a complete overhaul from top to bottom in their admin too. If they don't get the latter fixed, they'll never be able to get the right coach.

It’s possible just not likely to be sustained for a while

True, But UNC won 10+ games 3 of 5 seasons from 1993-1997, so they were really good in the area. Florida was obviously dominant along with FSU. And while Alabama obviously wasn't what they are now, they did win a national title in 1992, 5 divisions titles, and 2 SEC titles in the 90s. Everyone recruits nationally now regardless so much more than they did in the 1990s, so I think geographics probably matter a lot less now than they did then. If Clemson can build what they have being surrounded by the programs they are, there's no reason to think Tennessee can't. The better question is will it happen? The odds aren't exactly great right now

Their new chancellor is good, but they have no president, have no AD, and have no coach right now. They really need to clean house completely and start over because what they've been doing the last 15 years has gotten them nowhere. All of us have been in their situation culturally at some point, but they, for whatever reason, haven't been able to identify their problems and make the necessary changes. Bringing in Fulmer was possibly the dumbest thing they could have done.

VOLS are always a good hire away from being back. Problem is this administration has been poorly run for nearly two decades now

There’s enough talent within a 200 mile radius of Knoxville that it doesn’t matter if Bama/Georgia/Auburn/Clemson are good, VOLS with the right coach could reach their potential again imho

UT is an old dinosaur program at this point. They have a lot of fans but they are aging out. You don't see nearly as many UT clad folks as you did even 10 years ago. They have a big stadium but it is an old POS. They just aren't the name that they once were.

With who? They havent finished top 10 since 2001. Anyone less than 30 only knows of them as terrible.

I mean that’s kinda to be expected when you have an entire generation that has grown up watching Tennessee as pretty much a dumpster fire with no recollection of being elite

That being said, VOLS still have easily one of the top 10, maybe top 5 fanbases in all of college football. 15 years of being fed shite sandwiches and they still pack Neyland and spend money on such an inferior product. Imagine if Tennessee actually made a competent hire lmao

Clemson isn’t in the SEC with a fixed schedule of UGa, Bama, Florida annually.

If Clemson can be successful then there is no reason Tennessee can’t.

During their last run, there wasn’t the parity in athletic revenue that we see today.

I have always thought UT could be elite again but now I wonder if they haven't slipped too far into the abyss. Much like Nebraska.
