From AI & hope this helps:

Meanings of "cheek clapping"
Slapping buttocks: In a literal sense, it can mean slapping someone on the buttocks. This can be considered disrespectful or inappropriate depending on the situation.
Sexual intercourse: As slang, "clapping cheeks" can be a vulgar term for having sex or "buggering" someone, referring to the sound of buttocks hitting each other during intercourse.
Physical action: "Booty clapping" is a dance move that involves rhythmically clapping your own buttocks together. It can be a part of twerking or other dance styles.
Literal face slapping: The most literal meaning is striking someone's face, or cheek, with the palm of an open hand.
Defeat: In a more general slang sense, "to clap" can mean to defeat someone, which could be applied to "clapping their cheeks" in a fight.

It would be cool if some ladies figured out how to cheek clap where it songs like a song.

Clapping can be a penalty.

Clapping isn’t always a penalty.

Calling a TO isn't a penalty as long as you have one.

Calling a TO then say your were clapping also isn't a TO... apparently.

I think it is called disconcerting signals in officials jargon. I think when they call it it’s treated as a delay of game. Someone can check me on that if I have it wrong. I think that’s the way it’s handled.

None of that had anything to do with this play though. Kirby wanted the timeout then saw a chance to save the timeout lol. Kirby pulled a fast one and got away with it lol.

The fact that no one knows how to apply the rule makes me think it shouldn’t be a rule

It is clear. In 2025 defensive players can not clap on the field. Period. There is not judgment. If they clap it should be a 5 yard penalty.

College Football Rule Changes for 2025

quote:

Disconcerting Signals

No player shall use words or signals that disconcert opponents when they are preparing to put the ball in play. No player may call defensive signals that simulate the sound or cadence of, or otherwise interfere with, offensive starting signals. New for 2025, the terms "move" and "stem" are reserved for defensive cadence and may not be used by the offense. The offense may use a "clap" as a starting signal and this signal may not be used by the defense

The “clap” rule is discussed at 2:20 mark.

The defense can not clap. Period.

It's technically illegal to do, BUT he clapped his hands when UGA linemen were standing up receiving an audible. That's probably why the refs didn't call it.

Besides, it is not Kirby's job to call penalties. A coach cannot stop the game (without being charged a timeout) to bitch at the refs. That's not how it works. Yet that is exactly what happened. UGA was not charged a TO and didn't receive a penalty. It was literally a case of Smart stopping the game and convincing the refs to give him a do over.

No, it had zero effect on the outcome. I am not arguing it did.

But when is clapping supposed to be a penalty? That is the question.

When the defense does it. Bama used to do it until they made it a penalty, Alabama fan.

Lamar latrell ftw! This clapgate is going to eventually lead to timeout hankies being thrown on the field.
