I cant stand Peyton Manning, but it will be easy to root for him when Scam Newton is his opponent

Part of the issue is that the national sports media/journalists don't follow a team every week, day, and season like beat writers. So you get really broad strokes that are almost drive-by hits against someone's character, ie those idiotic letters to the editor of the Charlotte Observer about Cam's dancing every week.

I keep hearing stuff about Cam needing to be classy like Peyton Manning, but can you imagine the hot takes if Cam said their idiot kicker was out getting liquored up and running his mouth? It's convenient timing that this is the point of discussion while the NFL is investigating Manning for HGH allegations. But hey, keep calling Cam the bad guy..

Never. Maybe Walter Payton or Emmitt Smith, but it's always been a white, cookie-cutter, clean-cut quarterback.

Why is it so outlandish to think that he is a douche? He is many things. A great player and probably a good guy on a personal level. That doesn't change the fact that he is an arrogant attention whore crybaby that a ton of his NFL peers hate. And the fact that he plays the race card to try to look like a victim makes him less likable. You're a multi-millionaire that has the life we can only dream of

I was actually starting to come around a little bit to Cam. Cam, it never had anything to do with race, the problem is you act like a little punk but you started a cool fad by giving those footballs away to kids like that.

Same thing with Johnny Football, he's white, he was a punk too and still acts immature for his age.

Playing the race card with Super Bowl media week coming up is not the best time to do that, wait until the offseason.

"Doubters" is cliched and dumb especially for someone who no objective sports fan has ever doubted because he is that gifted.

Cam isnt Steph Curry who is undersized and underathletic yet dominates.

Race only matters to a racist. Has anyone made disparaging racial statements to Cam? Is that what he is addressing here? To emphasize race it out without a reason implies race matters to him.

I never took Cam to be a racist - too bad.

For years I couldn't stand Manning (galvanized when he led the Vol band in a stanza of Rocky Top after beating Alabama in Birmingham his senior year). Over time, and watching the numerous commercials (mostly humorous) that he's done, I've changed my opinion of him. As for Cam Newton, I can honestly say that I wouldn't like him regardless of where he played college ball (even Alabama) or under what circumstances he arrived there. My generation put a premium on humility and were turned off by blatant displays of egotism. There were many athletes of competing schools that bested Alabama in competition (and on more than 1 occasion) that I've got tremendous respect for and even personally like, but they conducted themselves much differently than Cam Newton.

Which is why he has a point about the fear with some people in his popularity. They would have to turn to NASCAR or maybe baseball to feel superior.

in all fairness, if you saw the entire thing. Race wasnt what this was all about.

ETA, if you dont think their is somewhat of a double standard, just take a look at Gronk Vs Cam.

I heard the whole thing on Mike & Mike this morning and I completely agree that race wasn't his main point at all. The problem I've got is that he brought race into it at all.

The guy that they had on as a guest (don't know who it was) actually nailed it. He said that Cam gets blowback because he behaves in a fashion that's far outside the norm for a QB. I thought he was spot on. You used Gronk for an example, but he doesn't behave any differently than a myriad of other players both black and white.

The difference, as the guy pointed out, is that none of them are QBs.

I'm old school (and old). I don't like the look at me stuff no matter who does it.

Wait so Cam = JFF?

If anything Cam = Aaron Rodgers yet Rodgers doesn't catch near the flack that Cam (aka tGOAT) does.

Are people scared of Russell Wilson because he's a black QB, too?

It s funny that since the doubters thing has been brought up, people act like they knew he would always be good.

Prior to winning at AU, it was he cant hit the broad side of a barn. he sucks. transfers never do good.

When he was drafted in the NFL, he will be the biggest bust of all time. His team hates him. All these others QBs are so much better than him.

Yup never any doubt from anyone

The Aaron Rodgers comparison is spot-on. He insults and trash talks opponents on a fairly regular basis and catches no crap for it. And when the Panther steamroll Peyton in his last game, we won't have to hear "but he's a Super Bowl champion" as a way to deflect any criticism
