and its not even the money. like, he was supposed to meet with the VT AD after the ACC tourney and talk with them about what they needed to do to get him to stay and hear their pitch about how he will be their frank beamer....and he straight up backed out of the meeting and declined to speak with them

for the first time in ever, A&M had a fringe top 5 football coach fall into our laps and then 18 months later had a frige top 15, at least, coach fall into our laps in basketball. feels good

To say nothing of the fact he’s indicated repeatedly he ultimately wants to go home to Texas.
The map dot where he grew up is 200 miles from CSTX.

Money doesn’t hurt, though.

Coaching matters more than any facility or fan support. I am fully confident we’ll be a regular in the top 10-15 with an occasional top 1-5 finish.

Next we need to address Childress. We’re stuck in very good, but not great area. Do you want to fire a coach who produces 40+ wins a year, never misses a regional, & occasionally makes a decent run?

Finebaum said he was somewhere last night, Washington somewhere for that regional ... or something like that. But he said he spoke with several people from VaTech, insiders, media, admin, etc., and he said it's a done deal.

Buzz is going to A&M.

Buzz is a great hire, but he's gone 10-8, 10-8, 10-8, 12-6 in the ACC the last 4 years. He's never been past the Sweet 16 at Marquette or Virginia Tech.

Again, he's an awesome hire. I'd be stoked as well for him, but I think he pretty much guarantees a consistent Top 25/NCAAT type program.........I dunno about constant Top 15 team. Semantics though, maybe.

he went to the elite 8 at marquette. this is the first time virginia tech has been one of the final 16 teams in the tournament since the 60s. this is literally the first time VT has made the tournament three years in a row. the fact that he even won 12 games in a conference like the ACC at a program like virginia tech is impressive on its own

i feel pretty confident A&M would be a consistent top 15 program and would make multiple runs into the second week of the tournament

note: ive been a big fan of buzz since his days at marquette and ive been calling for A&M to hire him on here and on texags since like 2015

You are right - I forgot about that one.

Yea I mean, it was semantics. Buzz is awesome and getting him at A&M is a frickin coup d'etat. You guys should be ecstatic. He's fun, exciting and is has proven over and over what a great coach he is at a high level.

They're going to announce he's going to Texas A&M 4 hours before his Sweet 16 game?

Ok that makes sense

If it were announced on Sunday, would that count as “shortly?”

should also be stressed that he lost his point guard for the last 6 weeks of conference play and was able to spin his other guard down and change the offense to go more through blackshear. AND he lost another key contributor to a full year suspension and i believe he lost his #1 recruit to a grades issue

what he did this year in the most difficult conference in the country is incredibly impressive, imo

but again ive been on the buzz train for years so im probably biased

I mean everybody and their mother expects it to be announced whenever Virginia Tech's season ends. It's the worst kept secret in college basketball right now.

I mean not really - he's a great coach, fun as hell and an awesome dude. I always liked him but I did a deep dive on a lot of his videos and interviews last year before we played them in the tournament and had forgotten a lot of the stuff he's said/done.

He's fantastic.

I am shocked he would choose A&M over austin. Austin has so much more potential

I’m terms of what?
Money? Push
Conference? SEC
Location? Buzz is a country boy, not a liberal progressive. ATX doesn’t appeal to everyone the way it impresses 20-year-olds.

FYI, very few people think Shaka is let go this year. He’s owed too much money on his contract.

Look for the horns to hire Chris Beard from Texas Tech next year.

Call it top 20. We can split the difference.

If you’re regularly in the round of 32 and only an occasional top 16 or 8 then more than likely you’re a top 10-15 coach. Because attendance matters. BK made 2 sweet 16s but he’s far from a top 16 coach because he missed the tourney often. Also the postseason is more random than regular seasons.

Childress is a good coach. Postseason success has a lot of luck involved, especially in baseball. The fact he keeps you in the conversation almost every year and can get to Omaha is signs of a good coach. Basically, y’all could do much much worse but aren’t guaranteed to do better.
