I think it's as good a plan as any. He's the best Auburn coach in history, anyone who follows will probably struggle. Hiring the guy groomed for the job who has been doing a ton of the work during Auburn's rise makes sense.

I quite seriously will not be surprised if Steven is quite successful. Moreover, if he was hired by an Auburn-comparable school on the open market I don't think it would be much of a reach at all.

I agree with all of this. He's got the blueprint for what Auburn fans have come to expect from their program with Bruce, and it also greatly reduces the drama and bullshite of having to find someone to replace an AU legend. Also probably keeps current recruiting environment much more stable.

He lost his last matchups against Tennessee, Bama, and Florida lol. Real question: how can Auburn fans not be furious at him?

Well that's awfully convenient. Retiring near October "gee wiz guess you gotta hire my son now"

Dude where have you been

This was pretty much considered agreed when Bruce did the "lifetime" contract and was widely discussed before then. This was expected by 99.99% of us.

Vols should've never canned Bruce.

I hope this is true, but I think a better plan would be to go hire a proven name while AU basketball is an attractive job.

Where did you hear this? Because that's not what's being reported.

Bruce is gone.

VOLS fans have known of the succession plan since Bruce was hired a decade ago, no idea how you have some Auburn folks getting caught off guard at the notion of Steven taking over

Dude, where have you been? The timing was due to players, not coaches. Trying to manage the portal

I didnt agree to nepotism. Just a few weeks ago we talked about wanting 2 or 3 more years out of him.

Steven is not his dad. Nobody is. Bruce's personality is different and very attractive. The son? Well he is a millenial

It was a good run. RIP Auburn basketball.

Tennessee seemed to do fine when Pearl left.

Auburn is fully invested in basketball and will continue to sign great players.

Its almost like he is far and away the best basketball coach ever at Auburn and a couple losses dont define his overall record that took Auburn to places that were never even thought to be possible.

Do you have any idea how bad Auburn was before Bruce?

When AU/Bruce fended off suitors and we navigated the pace at which Bruce was getting his priorities for funding, I'm pretty sure him setting it up for Steven was the undercurrent of all of that. We discussed those things at the time.

My position has always been that if that is what it takes to keep Bruce I'm completely fine with it. But since then, after hearing people around the program and CBB talk about it, I'm also substantively fine with it.

Auburn fans do realize they and the players just got royally screwed over by Bruce Pearl in an attempt to corner AU into promoting his son, correct? Pearl has known for months he was going to run for this Senate seat, but he made damn sure to wait to retire a month before the season so they have no choice but to promote his son.

Tennessee has a much better program overall than Auburn

This likely ends up closer to Pat Knight succeeding Bobby than it does with Steven having success

No one is surprised by Steven. The surprise is the timing of the announcement. Its almost October. The season starts in a month and a half.

He left yall high and dry right before the season just so his son, who has no experience, could get the job. He coulda left anytime in the summer when Tuberville decided he was running for governor. Its a crappy thing that Pearl did just so that his son could get the job. But then again Pearl has never been accused of being a morally good or ethical person. Id be pissed if i was yall

This potential has been discussed in Auburn circles all Summer and I'm sure the players had some wind of the possibility. But, sure, departing in September could be viewed as a problem for the roster if they're not on board. Our writers all say they expect minimal issue/defection because they like Steven and he's been heavily involved/whispered as future HC.

Auburn people weren't screwed over, you can probably count the number of season ticket holders who didn't know with certainty it would be Steven on one hand.
