Auburn has historically had some of the lowest attendance figures in the SEC. Auburn did not care, generally, about basketball pre-Pearl.
That's fine, let's just not start inventing things though.

I didn't buy season tickets before Pearl. I would get them on stubhub for like $3 the day of the game. 
I do think Auburn fans, like most teams, want to support a good program. Auburn simply wasn't between Ellis' runs and Pearl. There's nothing wrong with that.

I still can't for life of me find out why a fan base is so emotionally invested into worrying about their big brother in Tuscaloosa when they just made the final four. Must be an Auburn thing.

Oh I want Alabama to win in everything. But just like every other SEC fan except Kentucky a loss in another sport other than football does not ruin my week.
Auburn fans are not disappointed in the loss in the final four, yet are still heartsick in the football loss to UGA and Alabama last year.

Now if Auburn had stopped Alabama from winning a NC in football, then you would have something, but the last time AU beat Alabama, Alabama still won the NC.
That has left a deep mark on the Auburn psyche
