Yes, but despite what Emmert says the NCAA makes too much money off it.
????
NCAA vs OU BoR took them out of the football money making business. LINK

Yes, in 1980 there were 15 bowl games.
In 1990 there were 19.
In 2000 there were 25.
In 2010 there were 35.
In 2015 there are 41.
We need to get it back down to about 25-30.

I read the entire article you linked. Just to be sure, I ran a search for the words "bowl" and "bowls". The search produced no results.
But TV did correct?

8 wins over FBS teams. Make it mean something.

The NCAA doesn't get any TV revenue off of bowl games.
The NCAA only sells TV rights to the events they manage, which are basically the postseason tournaments in every sport other than FBS football.

Meh --- the lower tier ones give me an excuse not to talk to inlaws during the holidays.
They do not watch football, so it is the ultimate out---
Oh I have to go watch that Fresno State game (or Auburn this year) --- it is Huge!

And the lower tier bowls cut out entirely. Yes or No?
Stop watching the lower tier bowls and they'll be cut out as soon as they stop making money.

No. I like watching college football mid-week in mid- December.

All that money though.
If the landscape supported that, every team with a record less than 7-5 should decline a bowl bid on their own. Schools can do that now.

Matters not to me. Seems ridiculous that a team with a losing record should be rewarded with a bowl but if someone is willing to pay to have them come, that's on them. I doubt I would watch it anyway. I would be embarrassed though if MSU accepted a bid with a losing record. We had a 6-6 record I think recently and went to a bowl but we benefited from the extra practice time.

Bowls have been since their inception about tourism and boosting local economies while giving teams a chance to have a good time and play a game. That's why bowl games didn't matter to deciding the NC long ago. When bowl games did start to matter people started to think about them differently but the truth is that bowls haven't changed much. They are at heart still about your local chamber of commerce (aka bowl committee) bringing in tourism and boosting local business.
Obviously there are a shite ton of bowls right now but we already know which ones matter, which ones are about determining the final top 25 and which ones are solely for fun and bragging rights.
Staring straight at the looming offseason and knowing how much I'm going to miss CFB, I'll take watching mediocre or even bad college football to no football at all.
