Not to mention they got them after Georgia State decided they wanted and built better dorms

Yeah, who gives a shite? They have won 2 games against Georgia in 14 years. We play every year anyway. I don't know why everyone thinks UGA would care if Tech was in the SEC. The rest of the SEC schools should get prepared for their D-lineman to be knocked out for the season with knee injuries if you let Tech in.

Downtown Atlanta is amazing? Lol lol lol
Righttttttt
GT isn't that recognizable outside of the SE footprint. It's a regional school that draws 30k per game. How is that attractive?
Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia are much bigger brands than freaking Georgia tech.

Well they WERE in the SEC...Dodd decided to go independent thinking they'd be the Notre Dame of the south.
Tulane fell for that one too. However it was working for them, but then a scandal by the basketball team caused the board to cut the balls off from under Mack Brown. GaTech atleast got into the ACC.

Dodd was an arrogant arsehole. You guys think Bryant was bad at telling the SEC who and where he wanted to play? Dodd refused to play the Mississippi schools. Dodd was pissed that they had to "share" their TV revenue with the rest of the league.
Hell, this is from the Georgia Tech alumni magazine
My grandfather, who is about 75-80, hates Georgia Tech more than anybody else in college football.
However, Bobby Dodd is from my hometown and went to my high school (Dobyns-Bennett), so he at least has that going for him.
Hell, this is from the Georgia Tech alumni magazine
quote:
Tech was losing a lot of revenue generated from TV and bowl rights because of conference sharing rules. As an independent, Tech would be able to keep all the money it earned.
quote:
The Atlanta Journal also fueled the fire: “The 140 Rule has not been the only reason Tech has made eyes at independent status. Dodd has long been intrigued by the possibilities of a largely intersectional schedule.”
quote:
Of the other 11 SEC schools, Tech was currently only scheduling home and away games with five of them. This was by Dodd’s design. Many competitors viewed Georgia Tech and Dodd as elitists. The Birmingham News’ Alf Van Hoose wrote, “Since Georgia Tech hasn’t been the chummiest sort recently in the fraternity, spiteful human nature reared its ugly head.”
quote:
A Technique editorial on Jan. 31 also was supportive. “President Harrison’s decision to withdraw Tech from the Southeastern Conference is nothing short of great, so far as the school is concerned. Tech’s athletic program, at present, is operating far above the conference average, and our continued alliance with the conference serves only to restrict our program and pull down its quality,” the student newspaper said.
quote:
“The important thing is that we will be free to run our programs the way we want, and not the way Georgia or the University of Alabama want us to run things. The fairness and reputable treatment of athletes at Georgia Tech is known around the nation as well as the conference. Once free of conference hindrances, our athletic programs can only improve,” the Technique said.

That is what I was told many times by a knowledgeable source.
And again, Bobby Dodd was actually a better coach, at least on game day, than Bryant.
Bryant himself said so.

Georgia Tech finished ranked 9 of his 22 seasons. They lost 3+ games (in a 10 game schedule) 14 of his 22 seasons.

Dodd didn't stack his squads via the 140 rule like Bryant and others did.
He thought it was very unfair to offer a scholarship to a recruit and then yank it later from him. Dodd felt that if the coach had misjudged the recruit's talent or found a better player, then the coach should man up and honor the scholarship that he had given out.
I would take Dodd over Bryant any day of the week. If I had son that was being recruited by both coaches, I would advise him to go with Coach Dodd any day of the week.
When looking back on his coaching career, Dodd was most proud of the fact that less than 5 of his players regretted their decision to play for him.
Some of you Bama yahoos are simply not deep enough to understand where I'm coming from.

Some of us know the entire history of Dodd and his elitist, holier than thou approach to everything, how he treated schools and people he deemed lower than him and Tech and the way he went about using the media (specifically Furman Bisher) to destroy his enemies. And, how his ultimate decision to make Tech the Notre Dame of the South ultimately failed. They made their bed and they get to lie in it.
Kids then knew, just as they do now, that when they signed with Alabama or Mississippi along with the other 7 best QBs in that state that there was a chance they would not play and get moved to another position. Kids in Alabama did not care, they would rather be the 6th QB at Alabama and play for Bryant than be the starter at South Carolina. The whole argument was crafted around the idea that those kids were being abused. Find me numerous articles and quotes from kids that felt abused by that system.

Nothing and I mean nothing would make me happier than if the SEC got rid of Mizzou and ATM and got Georgia Tech and Tulane back.
And you wouldn't mind the consequence of Big 10 teams making twice what SEC teams make?
That is the formula to give control of the sport back to the Yankees.

Bring in Geogira Tech and ECU for 16.

Exactly why Dodd is a hero of mine. He single handily destroyed the GTU program, and UGA took their place as the in-state power as a result.

ECU for 16.
