Bijan Robinson calls out a clear culture problem that's infecting the Texas Longhorns

quote:

Bijan Robinson is one of the all-time great Texas Longhorns and he's one of the few that has come out of the program since head coach Steve Sarkisian took over in 2021.

However, while the elite running back excelled for the Horns and continues to do so in the NFL, he shared that there was an undeniable culture problem while he was at Texas, raising concerns that Sarkisian doesn't have his players' mindsets where they need to be to win it all.

"Sometimes, teammates went to the school because of just the name. They weren’t invested in the play; they just went because they wanted to go to frat parties and say, ‘Oh, I’m a football player.’ Like, that’s all," Robinson said in a recent interview.

"And I was like, ‘That’s cool, but I don’t think you’re really getting nothing out of it by doing that. Don’t you want to be a great player? Then do it.’ Like, I just didn’t know where their minds were... their [priorities were] messed up."

I mean, could you hear anything more concerning coming from one of your team's beloved and legendary players?

Steve Sarkisian will never win big if this is where the Horns' heads are

If even just one player is more worried about his social status than being the best possible version of himself on the football field, then the Longhorns have a problem.

So, for Robinson to sit there and say that numerous guys on the team had that mindset is beyond concerning for the culture that Sarkisian has allowed to emerge on the 40 Acres.

If this is where the focus is, then Sarkisian will never be able to win on the biggest stages with this team. Prioritizing parties and social status over being the greatest does not equate to a National Championship-caliber team, much less one that could win the SEC or even qualify for the College Football Playoff this season.

Of course, Robinson hasn't been on the roster in four seasons, heading to the NFL in 2023. However, the regressions that we have seen from the Longhorns over that stretch suddenly make a lot more sense now.

However, if what Robinson said still applies to any number of players on Texas's current roster, then we can't expect much out of the Horns this season.

The Longhorns have already suffered back-to-back losses to unranked opponents, who are undeniably lesser teams than Texas is, and that trend could easily continue for the rest of the year if partying is at the forefront of minds.

Longhorn fans: do you believe this to be true, or is the author, Sam Ferris, or Bijan Robinson, full of shite?

Probably the case at many schools with NIL and the portal.

Probably true. Texas has always had a culture problem way before Sark. It was highly evident in the Mack Brown years. They need a disciplinary style coach that's competent, but they will never hire one ever because they are too concerned about the "culture" they have now and if the coach can schmooze the boosters.

Likely, a common them if many of not most schools. The question becomes, what do you do about? Coddle the distracted "stars" or send them down the depth chart.

A lot of these would actually become good if there was no NIL and limited portal.

The culture at Texas stinks. What football program brags about how much they’re worth, yet gets taken to the woodshed by TCU, Iowa State, BYU, Oklahoma State and Kansas. I’m so thankful we play in the SEC now. It’s easier for my ego to accept butt beat downs from Georgia, LSU and Florida.

The wildest thing is that ole miss players seem to not care at all about the party scene in Oxford and that used to be a big pull for players.

Tex,AU,ALA,FLA all have issues with higher ups interfering with the FB programs.Nick cured that when he was coaching at BAMA,he told them either Foff or I’m gone.He also did that in 2000 at LSU.All those programs have had revolving doors for coaches for many years, the common denominator is their big money people being involved.None of those programs will be consistent until the right coach come in and sets them straight.

Looking forward to getting back to the "Austin has too much to do" and "Austin is too woke" stuff.

Since you all had a couple of good teams lately... we haven't heard much of that lately. I kind of miss it.

Like the University of Oklahoma, most major universities are woke. I will never offer up an excuse for crap play calling and crap performance on a the football field. University of Indiana is woke and they went undefeated last year, winning a National championship with only one four star player and the rest three star players. We need a coach that farts and spits fire. One who motivates and demands the very best from his players. We’re doomed.

The poor culture excuse has been used for every HC in Austin since the turn of the century.
