Why wouldn't the BIG XII go after BYU and or Boise State? They both seem like natural fits for that conference. It seems like BYU would bring in a lot of eyes because they are the Mormon Notre Dame. Boise State has the nice blue field and ESPN seems to love them.

I'm not sure if this was a serious question, but I'll play.

23.9% of Americans identify themselves as Catholic. 1.7% as Mormons (which seems very high to me, but the point is the same - their following isn't in the same ballpark as ND).

Boise State I dunno - travel would be terrible but no worse than West Virginia. It's a bit more than twice the size of TCU, and to me makes more sense from a recruiting standpoint than TCU just because it isn't in Texas. On the other hand... when is the last time you heard of a star football player from Idaho?

Both those schools would rather be PAC teams anyway.

When/If this blows up they'll go west.

Money. Period.

Divide the money by 10. Then divide it by 12.

That is the reason.

Three things to consider:
1. There is only one big Mormon school
2. There are many Catholic schools
3. It is less likely a Catholic would support ND than it is a Mormon would support BYU (most Catholics in Louisiana are LSU fans whereas Mormons everywhere tend to be BYU fans)

My point is that even though ND has a larger fan base, looking at the numbers of Catholics vs Mormons isn't exactly the best way to compare.

Stanford will never agree to admit BYU....not ever.

You're right, and that was a poor statistic for me to use. I don't think there's much doubt about the sizes of the two fanbases, though.

If I were at a Big 12 school I'd be at least marginally in favor of both. But if I were at BYU or Boise State... not so much. I'd be looking at the Pac-whatever. Less travel time and more in common with the west coast folks. And no texas.

Why not? Is this an academics thing? (I honestly have no idea.) But they did turn out the grandmaster of trivia, Ken Jennings.

I believe Cal and Stanford both said they didn't like BYU's politics. This was a few years back when they were trying to get in with the pac.

TO be expected from those lefties.

BYU has a very large following for not being a big team/school. They would be a good add for the big12. A lot better than tcu was.

Ah! Thank makes sense, for Cal in particular. I didn't know Stanford was all uppity about gay-whatever.

Academics is the biggie. BYU's research and grad school programs are lacking and the church has no plans to change it's focus. Then, there are "human rights" issues....the LDS Church's history of racism and hardline on gay rights.

The Pac12's acceptance of U of U was a recognition of Utes academic commitment and direction as well as a shot at BYU.

I've got family on the Stanford faculty; they tell me politics against BYU are long held and hardline.

Boise would never be allowed into the pac 12. This is a school that was a community college just a few decades ago. They bring absolutely nothing to the table, neither the pac or the big 12 would ever invite them IMO

Cue the "little brother" BS?

I'm a college football fan. If the question was about the PAC or the B1G I'd also be interested. I suppose the OP asked Aggies because most of us grew up in Texas, so it's natural for us to have an opinion about the Big 12. Some of you goofballs need to get out-of-state every once in a while!
