UGA is the oldest state-chartered university in the United State of America, it is not disputed by any credible person.
Not disputed by any credible person:
quote:
The title of oldest public university in the United States is claimed by three universities: the University of Georgia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the College of William and Mary. Each has a distinct basis for the claim: North Carolina being the first to hold classes and graduate students as a public institution, Georgia being the first created by state charter, and William & Mary having the oldest founding and operations dates of any current public university, but it was a private institution for over 200 years, until 1906.
I’ll take William and Mary for the win. Hard to be state charted when you opened in the 1693. North Carolina admitted students before Georgia.

quote:The term "The Big Six" does NOT refer to the best 6 all-time records, or whatever metric YOU think it should be. "The Big Six" is a phrase coined back in the day for the ONLY 6 teams to win the SEC CHAMPIONSHIP since 1976 when Kentucky tied Georgia for a shared title. Those teams are: LSU, Bama, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee. Period.
Oklahoma is in the top 6 of all college football programs and Texas is knocking on the door. To argue they aren’t in the top 6’of the SEC is nonsensical.

University of Tenn started in 1879.
It was started in 1794.

Was Blount College in 1794. Renamed East Tenn College in 1807 and wasn’t the University of Tenn until 1879.
Lots of schools had name changes over the years. It is still the same university.
Auburn University was officially named Auburn University in 1960 to align with its comprehensive mission, having previously been known as the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (1899–1960), the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (1872–1899), and the East Alabama Male College (1856–1872).

Sherman was not a founder of LSU nor was he a Southerner. He resigned his position the day that Louisiana seceded.

Transylvania University was founded in 1780. UK was part of a split of Transylvania into Lexington Theological Seminary and Kentucky A&M along with Transylvania. So there were multiple name changes but the roots of UK were founded in 1780.
