That barn team was great, for it’s time, but 09 UF, 11 LSU, 16 and 18 Bama would all beat them on a neutral field

Zero chance. Auburn would destroy bama

They were a solid football team but they were playing in a very weak SEC that season. Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, and LSU were all very good football teams but the rest of the SEC was straight up arse. Here they are, ranked from #5 to #12:

#5 - Florida: 7-5 (4-4)
#6 - South Carolina: 6-5 (4-4)
#7 - Arkansas: 5-6 (3-5)
#8 - Alabama: 6-6 (3-5)
#9 - Ole Miss: 4-7 (3-5)
#10 - Mississippi State: 3-8 (2-6)
#11 - Kentucky: 2-9 (1-7)
#12 - Vanderbilt: 2-9 (1-7)

Half the conference finished .500 or worse that year.

2013 Mizzou and 2021 Bama. Both because deciding games didn’t open up until the 4th quarter. Alabama had some help from ESPN though.

2016 Bama and 2011 LSU had the best defenses to not win a NC.

I would say 2018 Bama if not for the inexplicable egg they laid in the NC game vs Clemson.

2011 was an unbelievable year for the SEC.

LSU: 13-1
Bama: 12-1
Arkansas: 11-2
South Carolina: 11-2

SC was loaded that year. Jadeveon Clowney, Melvin Ingram, Stephon Gilmore, Alshon Jeffrey, Marcus Lattimore just to name a few.

For LSU, the reasonable candidates are probably 2006, 2011, 2012 - both from an overall power level perspective and from the perspective of actually being in the hunt. 2011 made it to the title game obviously, but 2006 was one sketchy Auburn game away from a chance to rematch Florida in the SECCG (and was rolling at that point in the season) with the winner going to the national title game. 2012 would have had a shot had it not choked against Alabama; still had to beat Georgia, but would have dominated Notre Dame in the title game.

Idk if OU's teams count as "SEC teams" but 2003 and 2008 deserve some consideration here. 2004 and 2007 were also good and in the hunt (hell, 04 made it to the title game), but they both got blasted in their bowl games.

If Nutt had let Malzahn do his thing while his offense was still novel and humming along with all that talent in the backfield it could have been a special year.

But no they just had to (Casey) Dick it up.

06 or 11 LSU

Crazy that since I’ve been old enough to drink I’ve seen LSU win 5 SEC Titles, 3 National Titles, and 2 Heismans yet it still feels like we’ve underachieved.
