What is the best recruiting story you have heard? Talking flips, inside convos, payments, benefits, trip stories, etc

Not really a recruiting story but Danny Wuerrfel threw an interception early in his Florida career. As he trotted off to the sideline he apologized to Spurrier. Spurrier said it’s not your fault son it’s my fault for recruiting you.

Orson Charles dropping the National Championship trophy on his visit to Florida has to rank up there.

Anybody remember the guy from like 20 years ago who they wrote articles about his recruiting visits? I specifically remember the trip to Miami but remember the Auburn one too.
Help, can’t remember the name!

2011 in Daphne, Alabama.

TJ Yeldon was committed to auburn and his recruiter (trooper Taylor) made TJ’s dad mad by promising him the starting RB spot at auburn. Troopers jackassery led to Jeremy Pruitt flipping Yeldon to Alabama right before signing day.

Willie Williams!

quote:

Williams’ next trip was to Auburn… ''I really wanted to go to Red Lobster for some more lobster and steak, but they told me the wait was two hours. So I got me some baby back ribs, Buffalo wings and shrimp,'' Williams said. "Even though I ordered first, somehow, I was still the last one to get my food. It took them like two hours.''

quote:

During the wait, several of the female hosts, nicknamed the ''Tigerettes," offered him some of their spinach dip. ''You know how it is, those girls are supposed to be there to cheer you up,'' Williams said. "But I told them, 'I ain't no animal, and I ain't going to eat no plant.' "But they kept pushing it toward me. It was disgusting. I told them, 'I'm from Miami. I don't eat that. You farm people are used to it, but not me.'" Later that night, the recruits were invited to a party on campus with their hosts. "The girls at the party were much better than the farmer girls we'd see all day around campus," Williams said. "I was kind of worried all Auburn had to offer was those farmer girls that talked funny. But the girls at the party weren't farmer girls at all. I thought they must have bused them in from Miami."

Arkansas had top DT recruit Solomon Thomas in the bag. He loved the school. His sister was already a student there. It was an easy trip for his family from the Dallas area. Everything was lined up.

The staff, including Sam Pittman, had put everything they had into recruiting Thomas. All Bert had to do was make a good showing to close him.

So, when it came time for his recruting dinner with his family, Bert showed up a drunken mess and embarrassed Sam Pittman, embarrassed the entire staff and embarrassed everyone involved.

Thomas and his family were irrate.

The recruit ended up going 2000 miles way to Stanford and became the #3 overall pick.

This incident, combined with all of Bert's other antics, including blaming a blocked FG at Miss State on Sam Pittman, sent Pit Boss into reaching out to Kirby and Georgia for a position in his new staff.

He left, the program imploded, the O-line, and recruting in general, went to shite, and Bert got fired.

There's also the incident when Bert called another school ON BEHALF of KJ Hill and told them he wasnt coming for an official visit.

That, obviously, did not sit well with Hill, a Little Rock kid, who later Went Ohio State.

quote:

On the latest episode of Zach Smith's podcast, the former Ohio State wide receivers coach singled out former Wisconsin and Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema for being “delusional,” claiming Bielema did something at Arkansas that he'd never seen another coach do.

It's January 2015 and Ohio State is locked in a recruiting battle for current Buckeye wideout K.J. Hill with his home state Arkansas Razorbacks, a school Hill had previously committed to before reopening his recruitment. Bielema, the head coach of Arkansas at the time, allegedly called Ohio State days before Hill was set to visit Columbus.

“K.J. Hill is coming [to Ohio State] on an official visit,” Smith said on the podcast. “It's the Monday before his official visit starts that Friday. Chris Ash comes into my office and says, ‘Hey, listen to this. This is bizarre.’ He has a voicemail from Bret Bielema saying, ‘Hey Chris, this is Bret. Just wanted to let you know that K.J. is going to cancel his official this weekend. I just wanted to apologize but he's not going to come.’
“Chris looked at me and I looked at him and we were both puzzled.

I'd never heard of that. Kids cancel visits all of the time, but the head coach of the school that's recruiting [against] you calls up? Huh?”
This apparently did not go over well with the Hills.

“People in Arkansas wonder how they lost K.J. Hill. That's why,” Smith said. “Along with everything else that went on. We got K.J. and his dad on the phone. They were irate, pissed at Arkansas. So he came on his visit and basically he was done with Arkansas. That would have been like Urban calling Nick Saban and saying, ‘Hey, Zeke Elliott is not going to come on his visit this weekend.’”

Shortly after this story was published, Hill took to Twitter to confirm the basis of it

Ole Miss' CJ Johnson made public declaration that OM girls swallow after a recruiting trip. I'm sure there are some proud dad's out there somewhere.

Isn’t that the same one that the guy, who was an Ole Miss Booster, that was taking him to a scheduled visit to Mississippi State suddenly got lost but found his way to Oxford somehow?

Around 1984, Eric Dickerson was being highly recruited by Texas A & M. The Aggies gave him a sports car. He ended up going to SMU and kept the car.

This one was gold! Momma wanted him to go to Ole Miss, he wanted A&M.

Bert and his fat mouth ( and his liquor) screwed Arkansas recruiting up fiercely.

One of the most impactful gaffes was when he pissed off every HS coach in Texas by dissing the HUNH offenses (which 98% of them ran) and boasting that he’d beat them all with a fullback and tight end.

From the junction boys
quote:

At four that afternoon, the single-engine crop duster took off from a cow pasture about five miles from campus. It banked near the student center so Bryant, gazing from his window, could see it. The pilot dipped the wings twice. Then the plane disappeared into the high white clouds. The bagman had carved out a square block in a bale of hay.
I don't know if he invented it, but Bear was a big fan of the ol' cash inside a haybale dropped from a cropduster shenanigans

The famed Gus Malzahn vs. Kirby Smart (I believe it was) dance off over Rashaan Evans. I can't imagine anything more cringe than those two goobers dancing to woo a high school kid.
