This is truly the greatest team in baseball history to not win the national title.
Texas A&M went 58-7 in 1989. They also fell a game short of making it to Omaha. That 1989 LSU pitching staff I referenced earlier is why they didn't make it, Ben McDonald winning the first game and Russ Springer the second. They were 58-5 only needing to win 1 game to advance to Omaha

I was at that that CWS! I also remember the Bama hitter that was crushing the ball that year. Magadan?
Yeah, he hit .525 that year
Oddly enough, when I think of Magadan, I always am brought back to him grounding out to send the Minnesota Twins to a play-in game for the playoffs in the movie Little Big League. "Mags, I know you're a great human being, but die like a dog"

1989 LSU Tigers
Our mini me coach has said on the record that he caught the deepest pitching staff in college baseball history. Sure he's bias but he's seen lots of elite collegiate pitching staffs in his day.
Me personally, I'm going with 2013 Arkansas. They did benefit from the gay ball era of college baseball but a team ERA of 1.89 ?!!!? Sheeeittttt

Yeah it's really hard to take a lot from that era just looking at pitching stats.
That same year, LSU had a team ERA of 2.40 and all three weekend starters had sub 3.00 ERAs. Aaron Nola had a 1.57 ERA. The worst ERA on the team was 3.46. Just stupid numbers that are hard to take seriously now and really impossible to compare across different eras.
That 2013 team was one of the best we had but the giant field at TDA and the dead bats killed our season. We were 57-9 entering Omaha and went 2&Q with 857 balls dying at the warning track. That's when Mainieri completely changed how he built his teams for a few years

Never knew these two were college teammates. They will be forever intertwined as part of the infamous 1986 Red Sox World Series collapse.
Yeah, Schiraldi talks about it in his book and the devastation. He was always introverted and socially awkward. I was a good friend of a guy who played a lot of little league with Schiraldi. He thought Schiraldi was a big jerk, but they were just kids then. Not like any of is were ever jerks, young or old.

Our baseball programs aren’t even in the same breath.
If you are not lsu or USC go back to the kiddie table when talking about college baseball history

David Magadan was worth watching it and Schiraldi and Clemons were lights out. Texas had a really good infielder seems at SS (Battle maybe) but it was fun. Crude by todays standards but ESPN made the College World Series.
That’s the closest we really ever got to winning a CWS.

if your definition of competing seriously is winning a national title, Tennessee has only competed seriously once in its history. If we're being honest about competing seriously, they've been to Omaha in 2022, 2021, 2018, 2014, 2009, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, and 2000 this century. If you're keeping notes, they've been to Omaha more in that frame of time than Tennessee has in its entire history.

Texas is without a doubt a better all time program than Tennessee. No one would argue that. However when discussing baseball in 2026, Tennessee has been a top 3 program this whole decade, Vol fans can definitely have an opinion talking baseball.

We were in Omaha in two years ago and won the sec last year lol.
You just lost the only coach that has ever done anything for your program. I think I’ll take our history and future. But sure throw gay slurs out like that matters in the context of college baseball lol

Not coincidentally, UCLA won the 2013 CWS Final over MSU. That Bruins team had perfected the West Coast, move the runner over, small ball baseball of that time and were super sound defensively. Meanwhile, Hunter Renfroe and Wes Rea were barreling up fastballs that were caught before they reached the warning track at Charles Schwab.

the bats were also different through the decades
you have to take that into account

I well remember that team, especially their pitching staff. They beat a Dave Magadan led Alabama team in the finals.

Very true. Players were swinging rocket launchers in the 80s and 90s.
The downvotes my first post is getting are something else I'm taking into account. I suspect some Texas and Tennessee posters have a hand in that. We're talking baseball here not football or basketball. Can't let the panties get in a wad when discussing America's Pastime. The National Game is different.

No team playing in the Southwest Conference can say they had the best anything.

You have to admit being preseason number one in football and not making the playoffs … to go with being ranked number one for most of the season to be eliminated before your rival OU was lol…. We had a good laugh at least !
