This exactly. Cutcliffe would have been fired in the next couple of years anyway. He did great as ND's qb coach after we canned him. Lasted about a month.
he had triple bypass surgery, but yeah he just couldn't hack it at Notre Dame

quote:this implies that they won bc of Eli. They won SBs bc of the defense. Eli was not a great college qb. He was good but not good enough to say they should have had obvious success.
Future two time super bowl mvp quarterback on the roster and we didn't even go to a bowl game his junior season.

he was an all american and a heisman finalist dude. Eli was absolutely a great college QB, he just didn't play on a great team. He won the Maxwell Award

If the criteria are 1) fired as a head coach and 2) did well at another head coaching job later, then I submit the following:
1) Rich Rodriguez (fired by Michigan, decent success at Arizona)
2) Ron Zook (fired by Florida, reasonable success at Illinois)
3) Frank Solich (fired by Nebraska, reasonable success at Ohio)
4) Tommy Tuberville (fired by Auburn, mediocre at Texas Tech, decent success at Cincinnati)
5) Ed Orgeron (fired by Ole Miss, decent success as interim at USC)

Technically, he wasn't fired by Miami. I don't think so anyway.

There is no technically about it. He wasn't fired from Miami.

What's with all this Saban being fired from Miami talk? I thought the narrative was that Saban was the devil because he quit the Miami job and went to Alabama?

Mike Shula, fired at Bama, now taking Florida reject QBs to the super bowl.

how would he qualify since he hasn't coached at a 2nd school yet?

Lou Holtz : Fired at Arkansas, went 100-30-2 with 1 National Title at Notre Dame.
Jim Caldwell : fired at Wake Forest after going 26-63, went 24-8 in his first 2 years in Indianapolis and coached in a Super Bowl.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Jackie Sherrill yet, unless we're using a very strict definition of "fired". MSU had been pretty awful before he arrived.

winner
I'd also like to add Georgie O'Leary to the list. Although he wasn't fired for being a bad coach, he was still fired at Notre Dame and did go on to have a fairly successful career at UCF

I don't think you can really include guys fired in the NFL (like Stallings or Spurrier). That is a different game.
Agree on O'Leary, but like you said he wasn't fired for losing football games. He won football games everywhere he went.
