Do we really need to rank a two year period?

Michigan athletics had an impressive year. No wonder they finished #1. Some of their accomplishments:

men's gymnastics (24-3) finished third nationally.

quote:

women's lacrosse made the NCAA Tournament

No wonder the list is suspect:

(For example: National titles in football and water polo are worth the same number of points.)

"The weighted formula puts 2.5 times as much emphasis on football and 2.0 times as much on men's basketball compared to the rest of the sports."

Teams that do not finish in the final AP Top 25 in football but play in a bowl are awarded 62.5 points (25 x 2.5). (Teams that either opted out of bowl games or saw postseason contests canceled received 62.5 points in football.)

Flawed system. If you were too scared to play Wake Forest in a bowl, you shouldn’t be awarded the same amount of points of bowl teams.

How many different athletic department rankings do we need? Looking at 5 sports to rank an athletic department is pretty flawed considering how many sports are sponsored at one school. While I get the rationale, either just care about football/basketball or look at everything. There is no need to keep coming up with these weird hybrid ranking systems.

These things are fun to look at and discuss, but ultimately that’s about it.

Just like any computer ranking system (for a single sport), it’s actually very easy to come up with an algorithm to say a team is “better” based on certain factors, but IMO the hard part is assigning weights to each one of those.

Like here, how did they decide that all Women”s NIT teams receive 10 points? It’s just totally arbitrary, and you’re right, using five semi-random sports is pretty goofy.

Texas had 10 sports finish the year ranked #1 or #2

If their football team ever would show, they'd win all of these awards

So, a strong Lacrosse or Hockey season counts as much as a strong Baseball season. Makes sense.

Tells us pretty much what we all already knew: Alabama has a nationally-celebrated top sports program across the board. They’re not like some of these other second-tier western schools (LSU, A&m, Auburn, etc) that might get lucky in a random sport one year but are typically weak taken as a whole.
