I dunno about that - Fox had a pretty good roster in the mid-2010s with Gaines/Mann/Thornton/Frazier/Maten.
Hot take: Our 19-20 team was a better roster than both, just young.
Anthony Edwards
Sahvir Wheeler
Toumani Camara (Dayton’s best player)
Rayshaun Hammonds
Jaykwon Walton
Tye Fagan
Rodney Howard
Christian Brown

You aren't wrong, that was a really good roster. And a really good roster in terms of construction. Edwards could score at any time, Camara and Hammonds were great long 4s to pick and roll with Wheeler and Wheeler was a great drive and dish guy. Wasn't Crump on that team, too? He made a bunch of shots in a few games. Crean really pissed that one away, though I guess in the end COVID destroyed the season anyway.
Fox was so frustrating because he routinely found solid players who weren't super highly rated and then he'd have a bunch of games where he had a great plan (almost every time against Kentucky)............but then the other 12 games his teams would just kind of show up and look like shite.

Horrible take. Georgia’s backcourt dominated Auburn and won the Miss State game.
This guy knows what’s up.
Terry Roberts and Kario Oquendo: best backcourt in the SEC
I need to add Justin Hill to my SGU graphic after his performance last night

Gates and White have been 1A and 1B so far. Both are overachieving with average rosters.
Jans has done an OK job with a similarly average roster, and McMahon and Paris walked into absolutely horrible situations that require ground up rebuilds.
Really the only one throwing up any red flags for me so far is Golden. He inherited a decent program, got Castleton to come back, brought in some good transfers, and they look pretty mediocre.

I can see that angle. A young Edwards and Toumani were electric with Sahvir running the show. But unlike that young team, this roster is built to win games.

Yeah he was. Finished with almost 200 career threes IIRC

Yep. He preached “positionless basketball”, which led to Camara pretending he wasn’t 6-9. Refused to ever post up.
Hammonds was a good player but always lazy. Walton got kicked off the team. Then everyone transferred because they couldn’t stand Crean.

Crazy that CMW has already doubled Crean’s overall win total and conference win total last year with a lot of the same players

It's still shocking to me how bad Crean was. I thought it was a really solid hire at the time and that he'd at the very least be a pretty high floor coach. I never thought he'd just absolutely implode like that.

The other thing that makes me lean toward this years roster is how deep it is. Legit 10 deep without a drop off. And Terry Roberts is a mf’n dawg. Auburn knows. Others will soon.
I implore you to add DA Layne to the SGU graphic.

The Michigan State second half show that Edwards put on was the best individual performance I will ever see.
Also on that roster, I really thought Christian Brown was going to be a good player. He and Walton were enigmas.

Love me some Sundiata.

You can't compare back courts with AU on a game by game basis. The AU back court can outplay any opposition it faces on one night and immediately disappear altogether the next night. It's been that way for 2 years.

And halfway through the overall season with 2 months of non-conference play to look at. You can form an opinion of a team and a coaching job to date after 16 games, especially in comparison to the previously coached teams at their school.
I don't know about Gates doing the BEST first-year coaching job among your nominees, but I think we can all agree on the last season comparison since MU has already won one more game than Cuonzo did the entire season!

If UGA goes 9-9 or better in conference this season, Mike White ought to get a damn statue.
It might be the second greatest coaching job in the history of the school behind the 1983 Final Four team.

I just want to see us continue to improve, win a few more games and gain momentum into next year. Its a rough bunch, but not Lamonts fault
