Why do Bama fans wear houndstooth when Bear wore gingham hats? I always found this curious. Is houndstooth more available?
You just don't know what houndstooth is.

Much like you and a long line of your degenerate ancestors didn't know what winning a game was when Bryant and Bama came to town.

The hat itself would lean to Bear. Landry, however, was the superior coach.

Well thanks for destroying a long held myth. I was told that story 50 years ago. Too bad there was no internet then.

Didn't need the internet to know that Lee Roy Jordan played in the early '60s and Levias played in the mid to late '60s...
All you need to be is old.

Bryant. If you see a houndstooth hat you immediately think of Bryant.

Which hat is more iconic?
Coach Bryant's fedora was much bigger than the hat. Thousands of years from now archologists will still be digging up BAMA artifacts with the houndstooth pattern on them.

Each hat is instantly recognized by fans. I wouldn't say one is more iconic than the other.
Landry led a very interesting life. Raised on the Texas/Mexico border. University of Texas Engineering graduate. Co-Pilot a bomber in WW2 and brought one in under really difficult conditions, all shot up.
Player/Coach for NYG for a time. Was Defensive Coordinator for the NYG in the 50s while Vince Lombardi was the Offensive Coordinator. I think in 1960 Landry went to Dallas, and Lombardi went to GB. They exchanged their playbooks before leaving the NYGs.
Good You tube on Landry here, "A Football Life". Commentary and stories from the players are interesting and funny.
A Football Life
Could someone place something similar for The Bear?

Tough call
Bryant was in WW2 but pretty sure that really doesn't matter for this question.

The Bear Bryant hat pattern isn’t iconic because it’s clearly checkered and almost always was! The stupid inbred a Bama fans wear houndstooth!

What the hell is this? I think you need to take yourself a 23 and me test before you start calling anyone inbred.

The fact that it's houndstooth would make it more iconic.

Someone asked Walt Garrison if he ever saw Landry smile. He said, "No. But I only played there 9 years."

No, Paula, you are wrong. He wore a houndstooth pattern hat the majority of the time, sometimes throwing in a checkered hat for variety.
Sorry it upsets you that he didn't wear the same exact hat his entire life. Roll Tide!

Pretty much any football fan would see the second hat and think "Coach Bryant".
This is true because no one else would wear a hat that dumb looking.
