Most seem to think Pruitt was.

Well that's just wrong!
We love kirby and Pruitt. Wish them both well in their endeavors going forward. Great coaches while leading the Tide's defense.
But, the question was asked and answered honestly. Pruitt did more to wrinkle Bama nation than kirby ever did with his recruiting our 4th yr safety
who figured prominently into our plans.
Didn't matter anyway.
Pruitt took guys who would have been key backups and possibly 1 or 2 would have become starters.
Xcyr' him!
Pruitt will be challenging Ga. & fla very soon for the eastside title.
Watch him as he prepares his defense once he accumulates another class or 2.
If ga. doesn't get it done soon, it truly will be Mark Richt 2.0

Pruitt was the better DC but does it really matter? Germy has a long way to go to match Kirby’s accomplishments as a head coach.

Not necessarily, he inherited a mess and the clay had no form or providence.
So the mold has been cast and the clay more substance and pop.
Given the resources that Philly will make sure Jeremy has to have to win big time ball games thus Championships. Tenn is but a whisper (1-2)yrs away from wrecking havoc on the SEC East & so on, so forth, etc...etal..

They were both very good - I think most of us liked the pressure wrinkles that Pruitt brought.

They were different but I liked Pruit more.
He was more aggressive and got the DL to absolutely maul opponents.
Kirby was GREAT but seemed more passive in his approach.

JP by far because he was so aggressive. Watching those players attack opposing players was a thing of beauty!
I mean you can look at what Kirby is doing at GA and his overall, let's wait and see what happens next, attitude in the game and understand why it doesn't resonate well.
Rushing 3 against Burrow in SECCG, sitting on the lead against us in NCG and SECCG, it doesn't work.

It’s actually astonishing how many of them are saying Pruitt
remember, bamamommy yesterday told us all that smart lost all his goodwill in tuscaloosa so maybe that has something to do wiht it.
I agree with you though, it's odd. Ask any bama fan around 2015 and they'd tell you kirby is one of if not the best coordinators they've ever had and was extremely instrumental in winning those 4 national titles with nationally elite defenses year after year. Pruitt is there for 2 years, with most of kirby's recruits, and also puts up good defense but with a different style and he's the best thing since sliced bread.

No one has said on here that Kirby was NOT a good DC, in fact several posters have said a lot of good things about him. Kirby was a great DC, but most of us believe that Pruitt was better.

It's also just a hard comparison for a few reasons
(1) Kirby was there from the start and built things from the ground floor. Pruitt showed up and got to take over a finely tuned machine. He had the leeway to tweak things and add wrinkles because everything else was ready made.
(2) They coached in different eras. Kirby showed up in the pre-spread SEC and we smothered teams. He had some issues (and by he, really him and Saban both) at the start of the spread era. We started retooling in 2013-2014 in recruiting, and Kirby kind of left right when that retooling started showing up on the field.
Kirby's contributions at the start kind of get unfairly overshadowed. However, I think when most people comment on it they are strictly talking about how they called a game (I know I am). They were both great, but Pruitt kind of took what we did and added some new stuff to it. He also had an insanely great group of players that he could allow more freedom and trust more.

Agree. We've always had good defensive talent...our D during our run from 2009 to 2012 was pretty solid...but from 2015 to 2017, we had some insane talent on that side of the ball on all 3 levels...

it's Pruitt.
Kirby cannot halftime adjust.
He does a pretty good job adjusting at halftime for us. The Oklahoma game and the SECCG of 2017 comes to mind immediately. I suspect at Alabama he didn't really have to adjust at halftime a whole lot.

Pruitt has done a tremendous job with the hodge podge roster he inherited for UT's defensive turn around.
Total Defense by year:
2017: 82nd (Butch's last year)
2018: 49th
2019: 28th
2020: ?? (Guessing borderline Top 15)
His defenses get to the QB and force a ton of sacks & interceptions because of it. Despite UT having an absolute shite show during their hiring process they may have surprisingly back doored themselves into hiring a really quality coach.
