I rec'd an email this morning from Auburn Undercover, which is Auburn's ESPN affiliated site, that said this.

quote:

There are growing indications that Auburn could be prepared to make a move for Minnesota’s Tubby Smith in its search for a new basketball coach...

Here is the link...

Does anyone think that would be a good hire? Can Tubby bring excitement to Auburn along with the new arena? It may not be a bad hire IMO.

Tubby would be a great hire for Auburn. He's a class guy, a winner, brings respectability to your program and will provide stability.

I don't think AU could do much better than him.

I know I'm in the minority of UK fans, but I always loved the hell out of him, and think he's an outstanding coach.

I think the whole UK expectations etc wore him down. When you win a National Championship in your first full season, then expectations tend to be very high. Ten loss seasons are pretty much alright other places, but he started getting branded "Ten loss Tubby" - which didn't sit well with most folks.

In addition, I think the recruiting expectations were not met. he got real lazy and sloppy towards the end - and most of it was poor assistants (which ultimately goes back to him). However, the level of recruit that he can get to play for him would be an improvement at Auburn. He has been pretty successful luring decent recruits to a stagnant Minnesota school that never did anything - and remember, they are considered a football school too.

Bottom line is that Tubby is 100% pure frickin' class act - grade A human being. He is fantastic for the image of the school, and is highly respected among his peers. He will be great for the community, and ultimately the basketball program if you are lucky enough to snag him.

Good luck.

If it happens it will be Tubby's third SEC program. Has anyone else coached at three?

My opinion of Jay Jacobs would definitely change a bit if he brought in Tubby.

Orlando is a good coach... not sure why he'd want to leave Minnesota for Auburn..

Any idea how much Minnesota is paying him? I'd find it hard to believe that AU goes much more than 1.5, but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

Winters are better in Auburn than St. Paul.
