No, there are no "plains" in Lee County, Alabama, but there are in the mythical town from whence Auburn is named.

Now you know.

And, oh, by the way, farther into that same poem, you find the following line:

quote:
Where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey

Now you know more.

I now know that Aubs are gayer than Aggies.

You guys need to keep that shite in Georgia.

Auburn has the best stadium atmosphere in the SEC by a lot.

Outrageous. They should be kicked out of the SEC for having hills. Florida's campus has only one big hill that I know of. Still, it is an embarrassment.

Can't say I have. Quick summary?

Auburn (the city) was settled and founded in 1839 by Judge John J. Harper. When it came time to choose a name for their new settlement/town, Judge Harper's daughter, who was a fan of the literature and poetry of Oliver Goldsmith, suggested "Auburn".

The following is the first line of Goldsmith's poem "The Deserted Village":

quote:
Sweet Auburn! loveliest village of the plain

I disagree. I've been to Auburn, Alabama and I'm certain that the "plains" is a term referring to the females there. Honestly.

Criticizing the talent at any SEC school is pretty stupid, and I'll even extend that to Missouri and A&M, which I assume are among the worst in the conference.

If this is the loveliest village I'd hate to see the others. Drab, dated and located in the arm pit of Alabama.

I thought it was going to be another "move Auburn East" thread.

Carry on.

The phrase lovliest village on the plains does come from literature. However, Auburn is located at the start of the coastal plains of Alabama. The coastal plain is a result of river beds and stretches to the Gulf coast. In simple terms, the land South of Auburn is very flat and the soil is very rich in nutrients, much like the Mississippi Delta. Chewacla State park, located in the Auburn area, is the very last foothill of the Appalachian Ridge. This is the point that the Appalachian Plateau meets the East Gulf Coastal Plain.

Auburn is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 places to raise a family in the U.S. by publications that rank factors such as the quality of the public education system, the cost of living and the median income of residents. To complain about walking up a hill is typical of my fellow lazy Americans. Visit Knoxville, TN and Athens, Ga, both of which are beautiful, but your legs will really get a work out.

the Kansas campus hills are actually pretty big, steep. In fact, I think the one the central campus sits on is technically a mountain.

I agree, Kansas is a lot more hilly than most who have never been there would think. Don’t know why you’re getting downvotes for this.
