2000-2007 Alabama was significantly down with probation/scholarship reductions/coaching disarray, etc. While UGA was solid during that era they were not as strong as they are now. AU benefitted. Things eventually reverted back to the mean.

The mean of the 90s when Auburn had an undefeated season and a Western division title?

Or the mean of the 80s when Auburn had four SEC championships?

I get that Alabama was down, and that sucks for Alabama. But the idea that Auburn is supposed to be a bottom feeder program unless Alabama is on probation (a fault of their own by the way) is a bad argument. That's no where near the "mean."

From 1980 to 2017, Auburn posted a 19-18 record in the Iron Bowl, three undefeated seasons, multiple Heisman trophy winners, and a healthy number of division and conference titles. For almost 40 years, you could rely on Auburn to be directly competitive with the top programs in the conference.

The past five years have been unprecedented on a scale no Auburn (and honestly, should be no SEC fan) could imagine. Five straight LOSING seasons. Laughable results against mid tier opponents. Zero sense of competitiveness against the better teams (save for a few heartbreaking losses).

And yes, to the OP, it's the roughest era imaginable when your two arch rivals are dominating the sport.

Exponentially worse than Shula years.

Worse than Shula + DuBose years combined, actually. Those two coaches only had 3 losing seasons between them, total.

In our entire history, we’ve never had 5 straight losing seasons. Ever.

Auburn fricking sucks.

I was trying to relate man, but you're right... not even the Ears Whitworth era were there 5 straight losing seasons.

The program was second tier of the SEC prior to the mid 1980s, Outside of the late 80s AU has not had any consistency, the mean is 7-5 or 8-4 type program with a few big seasons sprinkled in. That is apparent by the lack of back to back 10 win seasons. Other than 1993, AU was rather average in the 90s. AU benefitted significantly from Bama being down 2000-2007 but still only managed one GREAT season in 2004.

Auburn has to figure out how to take his money and not his advice.

The funniest part about their epic failure was when they thought they were really doing big things by getting Jackson Arnold

no

winning an SEC Championship in the post-integration era does

until someone other than AU, Bama, Florida, UGa, LSU or Tennessee does it, there will only be one Big Six

I believe all CFB fans have enjoyed witnessing it. I don't believe Auburn will ever recover from the Karma they've created, and they deserve every bit of it.

It wasn't just that.

Both UGA and Bama made the playoff in that year and played each other for the national title.

So... yeah. Sorry guys, that's rough... like Shula years rough.

Shula years weren't that bad. We had hope with Prothro and won 10 games one year.

The crazy thing about Auburn is they lost so many close games. They are huge underachievers this year.
