I think the people in charge at Arkansas are a lot smarter than most of you realize. This was not just a coaching search.

Think about this for a minute. When do teams usually go through a coaching search...when they suck. This situation is different than most all coaching searches.

Arkansas has a legitimate shot at the NC this year. Everything they ahve worked for since Petrino got on campus was for what they have a shot at this season.

I think they did the right thing by hiring this guy. They have guaranteed him nothing but this football season. He has been brought in to give some unity to the team and a figurehead. Their best shot at a NC this year is to keep things just they way they are and hope they can pull it off.

I understand exactly what the AD was thinking and now we will just have to see if it works. Arkansas' best shot at a NC this year was to do just what they did and bring in a figurehead that will not change a thing.

Naming Paul Petrino the Interim HC would have been the best unifying move for this season. He's someone the players would have rallied around.

It was the best possible interim hire available. It is an 8 month job to keep everything the same and not F it up. Given the circumstances, it was a very smart hire.

The hire in December is the most important one. This was going to be the same no matter what, simply, which assistant would get the 8 month gig.

After I read that statement, the obvious became the obvious.

Paul Petrino has never been on the sidelines as a HC, players like the JLS hire and I'm good with that!

That is pretty much what I was thinking. I think the hire was smart and Arkansas fans shouldn't be upset at all because I think this is y'alls best shot at a NC with this particular team. Bring in a bigtime coach after the regular season is over. You have plenty of time to hand pick the guy you want for the job and hit the home run hire.

Jon L has been with the team the last several years. It's not like they're not all familiar with him Thought it was a pretty good strategy.

Agree that going the interim route is smart. But, if you think for one second that Arkansas has a legitimate shot at the national title this year then you are absolutely insane.

I wanted Paul Petrino as well, but he's already OC and QB coach, and needs to have his head solely on that aspect of the team if we want to have a great 2012.

Also, the other assistants who were up for the HC job (Taver, Haynes, Horton) will be able to accept this decision and respect the HC better than they would be able to if Paul Petrino had been promoted, IMO. Smith is an experienced head coached who has been around the block a few times, and although he will let his assistants do most of the work, they should be able to respect his final say on matters more than if one of their fellow colleagues had been promoted.

Vegas still has us as in the top 10 teams most likely to win a NC.

Just reaffirms my position that it wasn't a good move.

At first I wanted Paul Petrino, too. But later on I decided that its best if Paul focuses on being the best playcaller he can be, without all of the other stuff that a HC has to oversee.

I think we did fine considering the circumstances. We were smart to not bring in a new guy and a new system with the talent we have returning that came up in Petrino's system.
